Greetings to everyone,

I found a few random Gor novels at my local used book store. Is it important to read them in chronological order? So far I have read the first book only. Is it okay to jump to book four, or will I be confused?

Best way to read them is in order. This is from a) that there's a continual storyline/plot going on and growing and b) as the plots goes on, the various building blocks of the Gorean philosophy and ethos are explained, shown and re-explained over and over again by text as well as by examples.

Think of how it'll be if you want to see a movie, but only get to be shown parts of it and not the full version....would you know what is going on plot wise, but too whom, why and how the characters shown are along with what they decide to do as they do?

So, yes, it's best to read the series from Tarnsman of Gor and onwards book by serial book (that is if you find it of interest enough), if so then go on to the rest of them, likewise in sequel. If not interested, then don't.

Important? Not really, but then again all depends on what you looking for?

Some females are looking to learn how a kajira behaves and there are a set of books that are written from their viewpoint and most consider them to be training primers..
Others find the books that are based upon a culture they are familiar or comfortable with..

But one thing is usually consistent.. that being read the books multiple times :)

Over all I do not think it a big deal , in the first few books you get to see Tarl Cabbot develop as a Gorean and there is some running plots over the series but other than that the books branch off in a more eclectic fashion.

You have likely heard of the movie Plan IX from Outer Space, widely considered the worst movie ever made...
One theatre, I think in Kansas, but I could be wrong about its location, realized that for almost 2 weeks it had shown the reels out of order. The film was so horribly written that not one person noticed, or at the least, bothered to comment on noticing....

I have, Dinnardin, even own a copy of it. It's indeed a strange movie, but I do not find it as bad (or even the worst movie ever made) as what else I have watched over the years. Maybe that is where Quintin Tarantino got his idea for how to shoot and show Pulp Fiction, who knows.

Still best way to understand something is in order of progress, besides it will also make more sense when explored that way.

But yes, food for thought indeed.

Must you read them in order? I suppose not necessarily.

However, they are a serial, and you'll be reading several things that won't make sense out of context. For example, Nomads (book four) is built on an important plot element from Priest-Kings (book three), as well as important mention of Tarl's banishment and his city's destruction (book two).

Thanks a bunch, that's what I needed to know. I am reading them for sci-fi fantasy geekdom/entertainment mostly and more worried about missing out on important plot points more than anything. Sometimes books in a series stand on their own (Piers Anthony's Xanth books come to mind) and sometimes they don't (LOTR)

So jealous you found them at your used book store! I keep checking mine and nada. The fellow there tells me they rarely come in. If you need to get the ones you are missing, I have found ebay to be quite useful... *sigh* we need a Gorean lending library :)

That depends, do you want the philosophy, the story or both? I read the books out of order and it made the story really confusing. I would say it is best to read them in order, but they can be read out of order to.

The first book I owned was book 6 I won in a contest on a old gorchat that is no longer around these days.. now I had online copies. But after reading that book I started to try and collect them all.. today the funny thing is the only book I am missing is book 6 as I have lent it out to a friend.. but after getting all the book I went back and reread a few books yes in order this time and I’d say it help Me greatly fill in some blanks..

I'd say with focus 1 through 9 as some above pointed out "Tarl Cabbot develop as a Gorean" but I disagree with Oak that is the very reasons someone new to Gor should read them in oder...

Greetings hierodule....

Despite what others have said here, it really is best to read them in order. I too read them as I got them and out of order. Eventually I had read all of them. Then I went back through and read them in sequence and found that a number of amazing things happened. First, it really is one long story and things are foreshadowed many books ahead and characters appear, disappear and reappear books later. This is sometimes very important to the over all story line. Second is that the writing improves immensely. I know....almost heresy, but it really does work that way and the books read much faster as well, even Witness.

Go ahead and read them as you get them. There are several used bookstores in the Chicago area that have them from time to time. I have found a number of them that way. It is usually much cheaper to get them there than online. If you call around to the various ones they will tell you if they have or have had them. It can be worth a day driving around seeing new places to track them down. Yes, most of the used book dealers know about the series because the books normally sell out almost as fast as they get them. You can even find them in thrift shops or library book sales from time to time. And...if you can't find one, contact the ChicagoGor group and one of the members may loan you one of theirs. They have been meeting once a month (mostly) in Des Plaines and the next meeting is this Saturday the 5th.

the question put to the floor is should the books be read in order or is it ok to read them out of order

the answer for me is clear. if it is not order it is chaos. how more clear can that be?

Hello Wulfstan,

In a post on another thread you said you decided to stop reading at Book #10. Why is that? How many do you still have in word format? (you know that's illegal unless purchased ebooks, and I'm pretty sure those weren't available in 1997)

Personally I think the first time through reading them in order is important, after that, it doesn't matter so much.
