A question that had been popping into my head a few times throughout the week after reading quite a few posts. Even though some of the posts have been long and some of them using words that I try to wrap my head around the message is still clear to me, thank god. Now something new has been popping into my head and so I thought that I would throw it out into the main arena.

How long do you think you would last on Gor ?

Now to answer the question we need to set some parameters, and these are as follows.

1..You are dropped upon Gor near the city of Ko-Ro-Ba.
2..You only have a tunic, whether male or female, and only a small amount of money that would last you let us say about 20 days on Gor.
3..All you have in the back of your mind is the knowledge of Gor that you have read from the books.

With this how long ?

I personally think that I would enter the city slowly, hoping the guards would let me in, seek the main market and look for some housing and work. Since I have no Gorean trade it would be hard for me to get a good paying job at that point of time and so will have to work hard. The adjustment might not be hard, as I grew up without the net and mobile phones. I would seek some scrolls to read of the laws, work during the time and then about a month or two, see where I would stand in the caste system. I would probably ease into the caste of Builders, being one of the workforce and not management. Unless there is a war.

Status: offline 		I don't think I'd survive terribly well at all, unless I were able to find a few veils and robes to cover up that tunic before anyone saw me, and a Gorean-English dictionary.

Though if I did make it that far I'd try to capitalize on my exoticness and study the herbalist aspect of the physicians caste, applying a few acupressure and meditation tricks that I presume are earthy enough the locals hadn't seen before...hopefully I'd be able to find some sort of apprenticeship with a really nice woman who would also teach me how to pronounce Gorean words right...but alas, that sounds more like the stuff of fiction.

It's a shame they have slaves there. The only unskilled labour I can think of that a woman can do without speaking the language would be working as a maid, and why pay a cleaning lady when you have a slave to do it?

Language would certainly be a big issue... but I think the problem is abit easier for a slave. I would just make my way as quickly as I can to Ko-ro-ba, hope the guards find me pleasing, and then let them take over from there. Sort of similar to the situation from the book "Captive of Gor" actually... or maybe its closer to "Slave girl of Gor", without being chained to a rock...

And while I am thinking on it, perhaps what an English speaking free man can do is to repeat the words "Matthew Cabot" to the guards and hope that he is still administrator of Ko-ro-ba :)

Interesting scenario. I guess I would try and find an agreeable peasant to stay with. Learn they language as soon a possible. Learn the long bow. Find out as much as I can about the city and what is happening. Try to figure out the best way to get a steady supply of money. Either get training at weapons or train myself. I am going to need to be able to kill efficiently. Whether it's sleen, bosk, or people. I think once I can hunt and defend myself well I can make some plans from there. A good sword hand is always needed. So once I'm a decent killer some amount of money can be depended on.

So at this point I would (1) Be able to defend myself decently.
(2) Hunt and build a tent.
(3) Communicate

That should do for the basics.

Status: offline 		Well, Frank, when I came out here, I had nothing but the land, had borrowed every dime to get, no savings, and lived a year with no heat or running water, working my ass off at several jobs to pay for it. Now I have my own timber, orchards, vineyards, gardens, substantial retirement savings, good career--I'd be OK.

Plus, if I'm dropped off with all my book knowledge, I'd know a LOT most Goreans don't, and could put that to practical use.

Most intriguing question.

From the description you gave it sounds like you would need a lot of luck and skill to wrangle more than a few hours of life on Gor.
If hunting or wild sleen did not get you, outlaws or bandits or perhaps hunting larls, tarns or some other form of life did not prey upon you, actually making it to a city would be almost as much of a challenge. You would be considered an outlaw and not have the language either.

If it were me I would not approach a city at first, but survive in the wild as best I was able. I have substantial experience outdoors, so given that and luck I might survive - and eventually make the acquaintence of those from whom I might learn enugh language- to better function in a community there.

Just a few thoughts there, off the top of my head

I believe I would do  well. I would make my way into the city and purchase some things wholesale and begin the process of buying and then selling. I am a merchant by trade on Earth so might as well use my silver tongue to weasel money from the riff-raff and rich alike. Eventually work up to doing what I know I would enjoy which is a Slaver. Once I become richer than Cernus I shall invite you all to my compound for paga and tastas!

Fantasy aside, without sharing a Home Stone or speaking the language at all, most likely the vast majority of us would be in chains. From that point, many of us who are older, infirm, out-of-shape, stubborn, ferocious & free-minded would likely end up as sleen feed.

But in all seriousness, that is a very good question Frank.  A good thought provoker.  I would honestly say for myself I have a 50/50 chance, providing I could learn the language quick and well enough  to go work as a Scribe for someone, I am very good with numbers and such, even without all the electronic gadgetry.

   That cracked me up, thank you much for the good laugh.
I think, if I knew I was going to be taken to Gor ahead of times...I would go have my jaws wired shut, so that I could not talk....LOL...with my Scottish temper and mouth, I would surely endanger myself....naaahhhh, seriously, I too would attempt to learn the language asap , I woud also want to learn their medecines and such as I feel I would fit more comfortably in a physicians positions or perhaps thir version of an RN....lol

I did have a kerosene heater (got it up to 40 degrees...), but no fuel for the furnace (couldn't afford it) and couldn't use the electric radiators because they cost a fortune to run (hundreds a month). So I winterized as best I could (old, beat up mobile home I got cheap), hauled water from a spring, and put my winter backpacking skills and camping gear to good use.

A year later, when I could get a well, and hot water--let's just say even now, years later, I don't take these conveniences for granted.

I also lived partly on wild foods (edible plants--I've plenty of land) before the garden started producing. It was a long year.

But certainly possible, if not particularly comfortable.

Why do it? It was clear to me that continuing to scrape by watching rent swirl down the drain was going to get me nowhere. I had to break the cycle. So I became a landowner and a homeowner. To win at capitalism, you have to build capital.

I agree with Kimveri on this, she makes good and valid points. 
Some might survive for awhile, but only if they stayed clear of others and had sharpened survival skills and iron will.
Most would be in total culture shock once the reality of it sunk in and they realized they hadn't shed as much of their western values as they think they had (yes, I'll include myself in that too).  I see it about the same as being dropped into the middle of the ancient Rome or Sparta or into one of Atilla the Hun's camps.

Status: offline 		I can guarantee that any of us barbarian women who ended up on Gor would end up in chains. As for if we would end up as kettle and mat slaves or pleasure slaves would depend upon if the people who caught us had access to the newest age reversing stabilisation serums and what we looked like at the end of the transformation or if we were quickly sold for labour and a quick buck.

As for the men, with little or no help from the natives in learning the language most would end up enslaved, once they learned the language they then might have a chance to escape and start to make a life, but it would be outside the cities, probably as outlaws somewhere as none have caste affiliations or outside connections to help them get started.

I think most of us would go into shock, some would never come out of it, and as many Goreans seem to have medical and psychological problems most wouldn’t survive the initial contact anyway. Those who did survive that initial shock and trauma would have a hard time coming to terms with our new reality.

Goreans chose people from earth carefully, none of the taken had heart conditions, depression etc, most probably wouldn’t be chosen anyway.

This girl definitely understands the attraction of deciding to do it. Particularly as the economy continues to tank, the thought of being self sufficient and getting off the grid is something that often goes through this girl's mind. She craves land and the space to plant vegetables and fruit trees. At present she fills that urge in part by helping on a farm, but it isn't the same. Though she's always instinctively run to the woods, streams, or oceans like old friends when her mind needed calming, for some reason, the older she gets, the more she seems to want to be surrounded by nature. Though she's pretty sure she couldn't go quite so cold turkey as you did- it sounds daunting to say the least, but an amazing adventure too! *Shudders* "up to 40 degrees" ? And she's assuming that's not Celsius either... But one never knows what one can do until one tries. It's funny that some of the hardest things one does- things one at times even hated while doing them- become things one looks back on with pride and a sense of accomplishment and almost fondness.

It sounds like you've built yourself a hard-won patch of heaven up there. It must be wildly beautiful and peaceful and well worth the blood, sweat and tears poured into it.
