I heard it defined as a voluntary demotion of status with one's wife or lover. By allowing your wife to humiliate you by flaunting her sexual intercourse while you do nothing except perhaps watch is a very submissive action. These days, as women become more sexually adventurous and less inhibited, I would suppose that this behavior is more common.
