So what "rights" do you believe we should have concerning our homes? We talk about personal sovereignty, but in the US, what do you believe that should entail, and what legal rights are in the Constitution that reflect this? How does that align with your understanding of Home Stone and Goean philosophy?

On-board, I will simply note that the right to enforce one's rights is a prerequisite to the existence of rights, and no current nation fully acknowledges that. Territorial sovereignty is a fundamental right which is in conflict with escalating population densities.

As for the experience itself, I'm going to echo what's already been said: you acted well, and should not doubt or second guess yourself. Seeing as you've had some time since the experience, I would also point out that acting in accord with a morality is a principal component of internalizing it.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Well the way I understand it, the Governement has this little thing called Eminent Domain. If they want your property, they are going to take it. The Government does not care about what anyone else feels about it, so actually it a moot point.

Acer,

That's not really the question, though.

Clearly, some power will need to belong to a government, or there's no collective to discuss. And, there will be times when individual needs and wants will be at odds with what's perceived as the collective good. I don't think any rational person would have a problem there. The matter is where a line is best drawn, and why.

The government does own and manage the land. I have neither the time nor the resources to do all that myself, so I'm glad government addresses it. I'm not always happy with how, but I'm still glad it does. I can of course do as I please with my own land--land I have title to by issue of the government--but within limits. I also, though, have resources from which to draw--cooperative extension, NYS Dept. of Conservation--and I've used these, to good result.

At times eminent domain has been abused. And I'm personally familiar with the process, as my grandfather's farm is now a state park via eminent domain. Is that better or worse than a highway? I don't know. But I still wouldn't be as dismissive as you've done here.

I may be missing something here, but your grandfather's situation only proves my point, The govt wanted it and they took it and there was nothing he or anyone else could do about it. Until such time as the practice of eminent domain is delclared unconstitutional, people will never truly own any property.

No one truly owns it now. The land around the utility poles on my property? Belongs to the electric company. Literally! My acreage went down a fraction of an acre when they put in the poles (I've forgotten what diameter from the pole they own). They have all access, because it's their land.

All land belongs to the government. All. A deed gives you title, but it's still the government's land, with title granted by the government.

Whether that's how it should be is another question. But hardly unconstitutional. It's consistent with land management.

I can do many things with my land. I cannot do anything I like. I can't even build anything I like without a building permit, inspections and so forth. The fire department can tell me where I have to cut grass. I'm not allowed to plant certain types of trees.

I understand what you are saying--but your outrage is over a legal point that doesn't exist.
