In ancient times a civilization called the Rama Empire covered most of Asia. The Rama Empire was ruled by men called Priest-Kings, these men had such mental and psychic powers that they were elevated in status to Gods. It is a very interesting story and quite possibly the source of John’s Priest-Kings.

In the days of city-states throughout history, before they became nations, the priest-kings were the default way of government, the splitting of religion from nature and moving it from struggle against nature to struggle against mans nature didnt come until much much much later in world history...

Jeru-Salem of the Bible, Inglings of Sweden, Aurthur of Britian, and so on.

In a philo thread that fell flat on its ass here I started to delve into it a little and it was met with a face that made Buster Keatons animated.

But I do wish you luck in this endeavor, Koa. Thanks.

Ron

Hi Koa,

An interesting bit of information! How did you come by it? I'd like to take a closer look.

Thanks,

My kajira is from Burma and she told me about their history stories, so I looked it up and read a little about it in a book about tech. of the gods.

As Ron said, Priest King is one of the most common ways to refer to what used to be the way things worked. In the tricaste system, the ruler caste was also the priest caste. Another name for it is God King, incidentally, though that is generally associated with a more grandiose version of the same thing. Whether Lange derived inspiration from this in any way, is another matter. First and foremost, seeing as the series wasn't all done in a day, one may assume the PKs were a convenient device to allow the setting without appealing to alternate dimensions, fantasy worlds (in the sense of the fantasy genre) or whatnot.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Greetings

In most ancient societies the leaders or Kings where also religious leaders. The Egyptian Pharaohs for example was refer to as priest Kings, as their position was as much religious as political. Or in ancient Japan where the Emperor was a Spiritual position. The term priest king is quite common and have been used all over the world to refer to kings and other state leaders who was also religious leaders.

The funny thing is that in Norway to day the King, we still have a monarchy, is the highest authority of the Church. A Norwegian monarch have to be a Protestant Christian as his position as head of the Church is as important as his position as head of the nation. So even if he is not a priest, many Protestants still think the royal family have special favor from God and he can bee seen as a priest King.

I wish you well.

Interesting topic. In my own culture, the "priest" class were the Druids, who were seperate from the kings but manipulated them from behind the scenes. They could for example command that a war should immediately cease. The Druids' training took twenty years, so a fully trained druid would have ben considerably older than many kings, who might be as young as 16 in some cases. This is why the king would often have an older counsellor or counsellors, e.g. King Arthur had Merlin, and the biblical kings had their prophets who advised them. Of course in those days young people were not artificially held back in an infantile irresponsible state as they often are in modern western society.

As regards JN's Priest Kings, they are also a literary device. JN wanted to write about a world that remained permanently stuck in an ancient level of culture, similar to Ancient Greece, Rome, etc, without further technological development. And his way of explaining how this could happen was by having an all-powerful external force forbidding technological development, except for the anti-aging serum which is basically just an excuse for the kajirae to always be young and beautiful (a negative aspect of the books in my opinion).

In those days young people more often than not didn't live to become adults, and 26 was a ripe old age.

26 was not considered old age. It was not that pepole was old with gray hair and wrinkles at 30 in older times. But it was more that so many children died, and so many famines, plagues and wars claimed the young that the average age went down. However pepole did get to be adult much younger. Hell in Norway you do not have to go further back than my grandparents for pepole to be adults at 14 or 15, now pepole live of their parents and are not considered adults before they are at least 20 most often. In the older time 26 did not mean ripe old age, but it did mean someone lucky enough to survive up to that point, but there was even then pepole who became 70,80 and 90 years old.

I wish you well

Greetings

My intentions was not to sound patronizing, if you saw my post that way then I am sorry. My intent was just to come with useful information, plus that the life expectancy of older times is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, as very many seam to think pepole generally was old and gray at 30, when in fact a person got old at about the same time modern pepole do, it was just that fewer pepole ever got that old. My intention was to come with some information, not to sound patronizing.

I wish you well

If you're curious, it's generally "belærende."

That should nicely sidestep any issues with double k's.

Hakkebakkeskogen, however, might be somewhat trickier.

Health,
al-Aswad.
