As Ron said, Priest King is one of the most common ways to refer to what used to be the way things worked. In the tricaste system, the ruler caste was also the priest caste. Another name for it is God King, incidentally, though that is generally associated with a more grandiose version of the same thing. Whether Lange derived inspiration from this in any way, is another matter. First and foremost, seeing as the series wasn't all done in a day, one may assume the PKs were a convenient device to allow the setting without appealing to alternate dimensions, fantasy worlds (in the sense of the fantasy genre) or whatnot. Health, al-Aswad.
