nephandi -> Life Extension (1/8/2010 3:31:29 AM)

Greetings

In the Gor books pepole do not age because of the stabilizer serums, apparently they can even take a 60 year old woman and make her into a young hot thing. Anyway, in this our real world there are many who are into life extension, methods to slow or stop human aging. Many scientists work on it, though it is a bit of a fringe field as many hold aging as sacred and get insulted any anyone might with to stay young longer that nature intended and live more then the 70 to 100 years we are generally alloted. I have even read of new therapies which could be used for life extension where the scientists behind it refuse to touch life extension. I mean what is wrong with wanting more life? I have even had my life threatened not once, but twice by pepole who could not tolerate that I wish to extend my life beyond the commonly accepted human maximum.

Anyway this post was not meant to bitch about those who get in the way of life extension but to ask, since life extension is a part of the life on fictional Gor, are anyone here interested in life extension either through Spiritual or scientific means?

I have been interested in this since I was 2 years old. Yes I know strange but we aspies tend to have strange interests even as children. I go mostly the Spiritual way being interested in Taoism, Energy manipulation and other such methods to stave off aging. But I am not opposed to the scientific methods either. I am thinking I will go for both roads and use whatever is useful from them both.

I think I will leave it at that and see if anyone is interested in discussing this.

I wish you all well.

Louve00 -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 4:04:36 AM)

Greetings Nephandi :)

I'm not really into into life extension.  But I belong to an association here in the U.S., called The Life Extension Foundation. (www.lef.org).  I have given a few people on these boards links from lef, but they think I'm pushing vitamins and supplements, so have stopped doing that so much, since I'm not pushing anything but information on what I know...and what I know life extension knows and can answer for them.

As far as life extension itself goes, I recently pulled a magazine article from Life Extension for someone else on these boards, that contained information about the Human Growth Hormone.  HGH has shown some promising studies about restoring youth (reversing the aging process) and all that kind of stuff.  If you care to read up on that article, here it is... http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag97/june-cover97.htm

Again though, I am not so much into extending life and restoring my youth, as much as just getting and staying healthy.  I have a selfish purpose to my getting into a healthy lifestyle.  My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer a number of years back, and I wanted to learn all I could about cancer, disease, and keeping yourself as healthy as you could.  That is how I found Life Extension and have learned soooo very much from them since.  (But please know, I buy or sell nothing from Life Extension, and don't necessarily think anyone should, unless it is their desire.  My only desire is the knowledge I gain from them [:)] )

Wishing you well, Nephandi

Greetings

I know of the Life Extension Foundation. They are the ones which publish Life Extension Magazine are they not? They have a good site with much good information on it. Thank you for the links, it is most helpful.

My best to you and your husband.

I wish you well

Louve00 -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 4:20:56 AM)

Yes!  They publish the Life Extension Magazine.  They are dedicated to learning and research on the process of aging, and on health.  It is an excellent magazine for anyone interested in learning about health, in general.

I hope you enjoy the link.  I enjoyed the article when I read it and learned something from it.  :)

Have a great day!

Rule -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 4:46:24 AM)

The spiritual way definitely is not the way to go. Life extension is only possible through yet to be developed biochemical means. Indications are that such eternal youth lasts only up to a little bit more than two centuries. Unfortunately I have wasted the past couple of decades on other matters instead of researching and developing life extension. Like earning a living, which I am rather hopelessly inept at.

nephandi -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 5:28:55 AM)

Greetings

I guess what faith one put in the Spiritual method depend on if one believe in the Spiritual or not, and believe the mind can affect and change the physical world.

The maximum years science can extend life for is debated, some say 130, the most popular for a while was 150, some say 200, some 300 some say 1000 and others say forever. I guess it depend on what methods are developed. Many have high hopes for nanotechnology, as it could possibly both repair any damage as it occult, and even reconstruct tired or worn out part of organs or even replace worn out cells. That however is far off, but already now there is research into using nanotechnology to repair damaged organs as they can do it on a cellular level, for now most of the research is based around astronauts, and how to relieve the strain on their bodies when out into space, but most technologies evolve with time.

I wish you well

Quite: to make it possible to scientifically discover a form of life extension.

I however think the Spiritual can affect the physical world directly.

I wish you well

I think stem cell research can do alot of the repairing you speak of there, Nephandi.  I think also, a huge consideration to extending life, is extending the quality of life, too.  I'd hate to live to be 150 yrs old, and not know I'm living that long, it I had, for example, Alzeihemers (which by the way, Alzheimers shows promise of recovery with stem cell research too)

So spiritually cure my herpes and restore the function of the antiviral and anti-cancer parts of my immune system, please.

The mind-body connection as it pertains to healing is not only real, but fairly well documented.

The placebo effect.

NOTHING is a universal cure-all and of course spiritual healing is anecdotal because there is no way to standardize the mind, but here's another example and one that fits rather nicely with your inquiry regarding your anti-cancer cells: Lance Armstrong.

Using the two in conjunction (scientific advances/spiritual or mind abilities) is probably the best way to improve not only longevity, but also quality of life.

~FR~

We're born, we live well, and we die.

Inability to embrace all of life is poor spiritual practice.

nephandi -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 8:11:50 AM)

That is true, there is little point in extending the time when one is old and to frail to live life fully or living with an addled mind. Life Extension have to be about extending the healthy years.

Stem cell research holds allot of promise. But it is slowed down by moral concerns. I can understand that when the cells comes from embryos, but why it would be wrong to use stem cells from the navel cord of a healthy born child instead of just tossing it away, that I do not understand.

I wish you well

nephandi -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 8:14:09 AM)

Greetings

I am not a skilled enough healer yet to completely cure serious illnesses. But I could seriously reduce discomfort and speed up healing as well as reduce the risk of complications.

I wish you well

nephandi -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 8:17:04 AM)

Greetings

So we should never try to improve our life? Happily embracing any suffering because it is all part of life? I do not agree with that. To me changing ones life for the better is a huge part of Spirituality. After all this physical life is as much Spiritual as any soul or life force, and bettering my physical body, betters my soul as well.

I wish you well

Greetings Master's
Greetings Mistresses
Greetings slaves

I wanted to share an article with you regarding stem cell therapy. This is promising and hopeful for many of us. I would love to do a clinical trial for this or similar myself.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-02-12-dog-arthritis_N.htm

One also agree's with Mistress Nephandi that spiritual can affect the physical world directly. No doubt it would take a lot an awful lot to heal ones body, but to a great extent it can be achieved. This is not to say the incurable can be cured, but meditation really can go a long way and make huge differences in pain and coping.

I agree with epona also.

Am not so into the thought of extending my life, but I am in the extending of the quality of it as Mistress Louve mentioned.

Hope you enjoy the link

Respectfully,
~twinkle

It wouldn't (or shouldn't) be wrong.  In fact, Nephandi, there was a story I saw on a news channel here in the States about a child that was showing signs of autism and the parents (when the child was born) opted to save the cord blood.  When the diagnosis came, they administered the cord blood to the child via an intravenous, and the child recovered from the diagnosis.  Saving cord blood at birth is an expensive option.  It is legal though.  Also, they are finding that in some cases, adult stem cells can achieve like successes (just not with all disease), so I don't see why adult stem cells should be considered such a taboo.

Please learn to read what I actually say, not the tangents you attribute.

I've plenty to do without clearing up your jumps in logic.

Louve00 -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 8:40:06 AM)

That was a very interesting article, twinkle!  While I know they aren't too keen on experimenting on people, could you imagine??  (Not to mention, its taken from your own body fat!! lol) Lipo and a cure all in one procedure!  [:D]

nephandi -> RE: Life Extension (1/8/2010 8:42:19 AM)

Greetings

That is most interesting. I have heard of autism being if not cured then eased with diets. And my aspergers actually get allot more easy to cope with if I eat right. Unfortunately the diet recommended is no sugar other than what one find in fruit, no milk products, no white flour and no gluten, which is something I have not been able to keep, but cutting sugar and milk from my diet do actually work wonders. But I have never heard about stem cells working. I am sure Aswad will find this information most interesting.

I did not know adult stem cells was considered a taboo, but I guess that when pepole have gotten the idea that stem cells equals bad, everything bearing that name will be frowned upon, just like with navel cord stem cells which it harms no one to harvest.

I wish you well
