I had an email from someone recently that jabbed me for being in school for so long (as if he knew how long I had been in school). He jabbed me for having incomplete sentences in my journal. He jabbed me for writing a one sentence journal. He jabbed me for being here and not dating. He jabbed me for not having a photo..

I just sweetly replied... um... please do not email me again..

Some people are just trolls

He is in Stars Wars XIII - Attack of the Trolls.

Jabba the .... nevermind.

There are just so many that the Force just can't take them all down...

Here is the flip side, and I am NOT calling the OP  out.

Why do people think they can post anything they want and not have it be commented on?

Why are people surprised when something stupid, (yes that is a judgment) is posted and then get slapped for it?

Why don't people take responsibility for their posts?

Love

i was wondering what your first thought is when you read posts from people who :

Everything they say is in a mean or sarcastic way
They put down everyone and slam people for making a puncuation mistake.

They always try to start arguments or constantly coming on with a joke to throw a great thread off track.

Do you get mad or do you do like i do and feel sorry for the ones who do that?

What do you think their reasons are for acting this way? thanks

It's interesting you mention humor as a tool used to derail threads. Lots of times the forum trolls (yes there are many regular trolls here, in my opinion) pretend not to get a clear joke or humorous remark simply so they can have something to pick on, some way to derail the thread of a person they do not like.

I don't get too annoyed at the trolls that come out of nowhere and start a little excitement then go away. Lots of new posters do that sort of thing. Some stay, some have their excitement then go. This place is very cliquish, and I think those people who want to belong, sometimes think they need to use a battering ram to do so. I do get annoyed at the type you're describing, the regular forum trolls. I give them a number of chances, but when their obessiveness with spoiling threads for others go to far (and I see them do it one time too often), I put them on ignore. I'm much happier not seeing their posts. :)

As for their motivations? Who really knows? But if you want guesses, I suspect these play a part: (1) very low impulse control, (2) just not giving a damn, even to the point of not caring how ludricous their obsessive trolling seems to others (3) swollen ego, (4) bored/angry with their lives and taking the frustration out online on "suitable" or "easy" targets.

Wow..... it must be hard when you feel so left out of imaginary cliques that you feel you must concoct some faux psychological reasons for people having fun on the message boards. I mean, really, all those judgemental people fucking around on the boards...it's a sin I tell you.

Seriously, I think we should ban all posters who dare to quip or derail threads or laugh, that should be a new rule in the TOS.

Why don't you suggest it? See how quickly it gets implemented.

Can we also vent about people who make whiny passive aggressive comments online but don't have the courage of their convictions to respond openly? Instead they take it to pm to be nasty.

I think they are frequently blunt, not mean, and that the people who complain about them aren't actually looking for other opinions as they claim, but instead just want everyone to tell her that she was right. Even when nobody agrees with her.

I also have no time for people who tell the people responding to a thread that they aren't responding properly.  Because they aren't confirming the op's beliefs. You don't get to tell other people what to say. If you can't deal with people telling you that you are dead wrong, then don't ever talk to anyone.

And whining about it is the ultimate mistake, it just confirms in everyone's beliefs that you aren't someone they would ever want to talk to.

This and the "Just shut the damned computer off if it bothers you!!!" Cuz lord knows if anything/one on here upsets me, I am turning the fucker off and getting a life.

I always think when lots of people complain about a clique anyone denying their existence is in that clique, not really to you red just a general observation

Anyways in relation to the OP I can be sarcastic with the best of them, though generally I attempt to balance it with more serious posts than mocking ones, there are people on here that swing totally the other way and generally I don't bother reading what they write, once you know the people who do it I find it really easy to skip them. Its the same with anything in life, if you can't be bothered with something ignore it. Generally the only reason I get pissed off when a couple of posters are joking on a thread it is when I have made what I assume is a good posting and it gets lost in the dross, but then that is an ego thing. Other than that it doesn't bother me.

Hi Lilly, I understand what you are saying, but think about it; can there really be a "clique" online? I mean, to me, it is just a huge website for those with common interests. We are all here for varying reasons and the forums are a big playground for sharing ideas, debates, jokes, politics, advice, wanking material, whatever.

I don't feel that there is a clique and I talk to whomever I want, come in and post to whatever thread I want, as long as I obey the TOS.

I do understand that we all want to be heard and if your good answer is lost amid the chaos, I guess that is just a hazard of online communication.

Like you, I do really try to balance jokiness with serious replies, depending on the mood, topic or direction the thread goes in.

Hey Red,

It wasn't aimed at you specifically hun, and I know what you mean 'how can their be a clique online, I don't know but I do think there can be, I do think that new posters feel a little intimidated, I know we have all been there but I remember when I changed my name suddenly a few people were shockingly hostile towards me until they realised who I was. It isn't so much a clique as a mistrusting atmosphere in that regard.

The only way you could really see any cliquey behavior or anything close to it is down at the rs section, which is a little intimidating but then its easy to just leave that section alone. I think its just about having to prove yourself as having a touch skin very early on to get any semblance of respect. There was a thread about it recently where someone spoke about how someone they knew as being a very respected person in her local community was basically ridiculed out of this place, which doesn't shock me. If you speak to most brits they avoid cm like the plague.

Lily,

Many a time a well placed one line humorous comment can say a great deal in a thread.

Some single posts are 4 feet long, regurgitate like a cheap date, and say nothing.

A wisecrack may convey that they think the topic is ridiculous and only deserving of scorn. That's a valid position as well. I try and do a little of everything but if I wrote what I seriously thought about every single topic my arms would drop off.

EbonyWood,

Oh I agree, there are some threads where humour is the best thing for it, others where sarcasm works best, but then there are posters who always get it wrong and make snide comments all the time, not many, I can think of one specifically who I personally roll my eyes at every time.

I also agree there are many people who write lots and say nothing.

I am not sure about the whole if you were only serious your arms would drop off because well you don't have to reply to every thread but then I know I am being facetious.

There are times when the humour totally misses the mark, I remember once ironically you made a comment about something I said (I have a great memory, you said something after I spoke about the bristol munch, and I just was totally unsure whether you were joking or not) although that is a pretty inconsequential example I just worry at times when people aren't familiar with posting styles they will take everything seriously, I don't think we have to baby people or anything, just I dunno sometimes its in bad taste.

My rule is if in doubt and it looks weird, assume it was a joke that didn't quite work and move on.

Inflection is very tough to read on the written page and folk deserve the benefit of the doubt. The same words can be read different ways by different people with different cultures and language skill levels.

The main thing to remember is that I'm aways right and always funny.
