Status: offline 		I just started reading the gor books and noticed that I had lot of the same philosophies as the book.  I would like to learn more and take part in the lifestyle but I don't really care about it's protocols or customs like homestones or slave positions, I'm just interested in philosophy and making that a part of my life.

Then do so.  And even if you don't care about Home Stones, it is TWO words, not one, with both the H and S capitalized.  There are many that DO care about them, and to see it used inaccurately is offensive.

After reading a few of the books here and there and out of sequence I was given some advice here to read them and go in order. So like you, I am now doing that. I am up to book seven. I would agree that the philosophy is the key element and much of that is extrapolated by the way that men conduct themselves through the protocols and customs found in the books.

I have always related to the Books in one way or another and I find that men who share the same beliefs, even if they know nothing of Gorean, are more of the type that I find myself likely to associate with.

First off, welcome to the boards. A lot of good information and ideas are put forward here, along with healthy doses of foolishness- but thats pretty much par for the Intertubes.

Be aware, though, that Gor tends to be rather polarizing. For every person like you who is interested in the philosophical aspects, and considers the protocols and minutia of the books to be secondary, there are others who consider them primary.
Which is a roundabout way of saying that your question "What makes you Gorean" has as many different answers as there are Goreans. No one has yet developed a Gorean catechism or creed, there isn't a Gorean Manifesto, and if one were to be written, the majority would shout it down.

So read the books, read the message boards and websites, and feel free to contribute.

Not true, sorry. There are at least one Gorean community whom have taken the time as well as labour to write one up and also lives by it.

Whether or not others would agree with the credo is another question people will have to answer for themselves.

1.  The ability to troll a forum, looking for an opportunity to "correct others".
2.  The desire to allow any debate to dissemble to an argument about semantics and then penis measuring.
3.  The love of online drama over introspection and adding anything to the world.
4.  The ability to glance at others online and immediately know why they are deficient and certainly Not Gorean.
5.  The innate ability to offend even the most passive of people and run off even the most sadistic.
6.  The ability to be offended by any question or statement on an online forum, no matter how seemingly benign.
7.  The ability to role-play, but be offended by the accusation of role-play.  Basically a role-play where you must stay in-character at all costs.
8.  The ability to take a wide latitude in the use of the word slave when applying to one's own sexual partners, but a very narrow definition when applying it to others.  
9.  Above all, to still have the desire to still self-identify as Gorean even with the above qualifications and appraisal by others finding your self-identification insufficient while others in a wider BDSM world judge you for being associated with people with the traits listed above.

Status: offline 		That's actually a good question, I've never understood why people get upset when people write Home Stone as "homestone."

It's kinda like, I've seen people who are really religious, who spell Bible with a capital B or write "God" as "G-d" but if they were on a forum and got asked something like "How do you interpret the bible stories, as fact or allegory" or "what is your personal relationship with God" their first response would be to answer the question, not go "OMG you wrote out the name of G-d I will not answer your blasphemous question."

And I mean, the whole "don't speak the name of God" thing is in the freaking Bible and people tend to let it go. I honestly don't understand what makes a Home Stone more significant when you put it in two words that are capped but then again I never really understood the whole "I am going to passive aggressively insult you by lowercasing your name OMG!!!!" thing either, so maybe I just don't get the significance of Capital Letters.

I don't know, I think there's a lot more intentional disrespect in peeing on a flag, but even so if someone peed on my country's flag I'd just roll my eyes and think they were ignorant and desperately seeking attention.

I thought my examples of the Bible and the spelling of God as G-d were able to fairly show the gravitas of the situation - most people who write "Bible" as "bible" aren't doing it to show the same sentiment as urinating on a Bible. And you can't say that Goreans take a Home Stone more seriously than a devout Christian views the Bible.

On another thread, a poster repeatedly tried to insult me by lowercasing my name. The intentional bad punctuation got on my nerves more than anything else, and that was an intentional attempt at disrespect, not just a hasty scribbled post that mixes up homophones and didn't capitalise "Gor" either.

I guess what I'm saying is, if someone misspells a word WITHOUT intending to use the misspelling as an attempt to insult the concept that the word represents, why take offence? Goreans never really struck me as the easily offended type.

Well, Elisabella, if it WAS unintentionally, the error of it would most certainly be pointed out to whom had screwed up. Which I can see was done by ElizabethAnne.

Again, YOU might just roll your eyes and think as you do if someone was to piss on your flag, but I would bet that there would be others, NOT going that way and make it VERY physically clear to the flag pisser, that what was done was not smart and not kosher. Because THEY find it to be of a special significance and which you obviously do not share.

This is very clear to me, both in meaning as well as in understanding in relation to a Home Stone and the concept behind it. While it seems that you don't.

And yes, Goreans take offence ESPECIALLY when it comes to the matter of a Home Stone! Again, I guess to understand this you'd have to be Gorean, which you are not.

The importance of a Home Stone is not that its a well-kept rock. Those who see a rock don't understand what a Home Stone is or why it's so important.

It's the crucial key concept to all of Gor, literally and to the personal and social philosophy.

Much more than semantic choices. To not understand this is to not understand Gor--any of it.

I'm not at all questioning the importance of the Home Stone (I did use the Bible as analogy after all) but rather I'm questioning the importance of the capitalization.

Is the concept a word represents automatically diminished if the word representing it isn't capitalized? And if so, does it matter if the lack of capitalization was used as an intentional show of disregard, or is the lack of capitalization enough to render it an insult?

ETA: I personally see a difference between "hi bella how are you" and "Hello, bella, how are you?" because one is intentionally meant to be insulting, whereas the other just shows careless typing. I guess what I'm saying is if OP didn't capitalize "Gor" either, and misused the contraction "it's," is it really such a big deal that he didn't capitalize another two words that are generally capitalized?

But I'm also not chastising those who point it out. It does make a difference, and the difference is significant.

I just don't want to waste time on a language debate on the Internet over a principle the debaters don't understand.

I have absolutely no trouble seeing why some do make an issue of it. It's not the same as the flag or the Bible. It's much more fundamental than those symbols of nation and religion. This is a bedrock principle of human connection and society.

Do you find it difficult to type while standing?  I assume that you are standing while discussing matters of honor.  I see the answer to that as two possibilities.  Either you stand whenever you enter a thread about honor and and type uncomfortibly while bending to the computer (which amuses me at the silliness of the thought), or you just chose to follow the formal rules when it suits you and allows you to be appear indignant.  As a Gorean would never write the words "Home Stone" in english, why would one care about its capitalization?  Home Stone is not a propper noun or title, it is an object.  I could see the argument for The Home Stone of Ar.  Also, the contraction or even hyphenation in phonetic speach which is reflected in online posting seems perfectly acceptible.  Of course, I am no grammar expert, but I doubt that you are either.  Ths sounds like another person being corrected for not using the proper onlinism.
