No white foods. Brown rice instead of white. Whole wheat instead of white. Sweet potatoes/winter squashes instead of white potatoes.

No soda. The biggest change is to eliminate all sweetened beverages. If you have a cup of coffee you may put two teaspoons of sugar in it. That 20 oz soda contains 32 teaspoons of soda.

Beyond that, cut back on everything. Don't eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's. Get the smallest cup in the house and fill that half full. Or buy the little individual servings and ration yourself to one a day.

If I want a candy I go to the deli that sells the individual junior mints. I don't buy a whole package. Same with potato chips. Buy a single serving bag and not the big one.

And read serving sizes because what you assume is a single serving like a bottle of soda is actually 2.5 servings.

rule of thumb...for grapes, eat a bunch that is about the size of a light bulb.

meats...size of a deck of cards.  Go for lean cuts of meats.

Chicken should not have any skin (but that is my favorite part).  Think about all the fat that is used to cook chicken and tenders (and gizzards on my part).   Baked breasts is great, especially if you soak them in italian dressing before baking.

I am going to have to second those who have mentioned carbs. Even if you eliminate all sugar from your diet, guess where your blood sugar comes from.

It is a good thing to get as much sugar out of the diet as possible. In cases where sugar is absolutely needed, like to bake a cake or make icecream use dark brown sugar. The data to support this is on my computer and I have offered it up, but gotten few takers. Some of it I picked up from our own USDA, but the more useful part of it came from a website in Austrailia, and it is quite thoroughly bibliographized. Supporting cites at the end of each section have so many cites from reputable sources even the most skeptical among us will believe it (you know who you are).

If you want to snack, might I suggest nuts. Planter's mixed nuts are good, and they do not use hydrogenated or hydrolyzed oils. Those are another big nono BTW. And when you eat them, don't pick and choose your favorites, eat all of the types as they contain diffeent nutrients.

And you need to find sources of the trace minerals chromium and vanadium. That does not mean to eat a bunch of Craftsman wrenches, you need it in a metabolisable form. Some find great benefits from a colloidal mineral supplement, while other seem to be unable to absorb it properly.

If you want my database just let me know "where" to send it. It will be in the form of a couple of ZIP files and I'll tell you how to use them after decompression.

If you have the strength to eliminate sugar, that will help you in many more ways than just leveling your blood sugar. I did and I am extremely glad I did. Now that I got used to not having it, it almost makes me sick.

I was getting quiet on the subject because my health is not what it once was, but have come to the conclusion that what happpened to me last year would've killed most normal humans.

T

Great advice so far. Low(er) carb is the key. As a Type II diabetic, I assure you it's not easy at first, but it is doable. It's also well worth it in the long run. I suggest getting some low carb cookbooks, to expand your dietary choices. There is a lot of great food out there that you can still eat; try not to focus on what you can't have- instead, find alternatives that work for you.

Not sure if anybody else suggested this site, but lots of good people and great information:

Oh yeah...and EXERCISE!!!!

That's a very good point, rajaa: two of the immediate results high blood sugars have is that they make you thirsty and they make you piss a lot. It's surprisingly easy to drink a couple of bottles of water a day and still suffer from dehydration if you have it bad enough.

I'm curious what is a pre-diabetic ?
I had Gestational diabetes and I watched sugar and all my carbs and luckily I didn't have to take insulin. As for weight gain.. I gained hardly any weight.

Day 1

Had high fiber cereal and a banana for breakfast

Had a quesadilla for lunch (has veggies in it and a small amount of cheese). Dessert was a banana

Had dinner with an apple for dessert

For some reason I am breaking out in hives.

Drank water today and quit my occasional soda.. I haven;t touched any junk food today..

Wiki can be your friend!

Prediabetes is the state in which some but not all of the diagnostic criteria for diabetes are met.[1] It is often described as the “gray area” between normal blood sugar and diabetic levels. While in this range, patients are at risk for not only developing type 2 diabetes, but also for cardiovascular complications.[2] It has been termed "America's largest healthcare epidemic," affecting more than 57 million Americans.[3] Prediabetes is also referred to as borderline diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and/or impaired fasting glucose (IFG).[4]

I don't suggest that you simply stop eating things.  Just switch what you do eat.

I switched from sodas to "almost-sodas".  Five parts sparkling water, and one part juice with some ice.  (Fruit juices are really bad for diabetics.)

Canned spaghetti sauce is loaded with HFCS.  Make your own from low salt canned tomatoes.

Read the carb contents of frozen dinners.  Quite an eye opener.

More fiber, along with reading how many grams of carbs and sugars are in food, you need to read the fiber content and pick the stuff with more fiber.

Steel cut oatmeal, not instant. But as it takes 45 minutes to cook, I do a batch of it once a week at night and reheat when wanted.

And go learn about the glycemic index. You need to eat low glycemic index foods, not high.

Half the plate should be vegetables, one quarter protein and one quarter carbs. Each quarter about the size of a deck of carbs but you get a free pass for raw vegetables.

If you can, why not simply just stop eating things, such as sweets and junk?

Junk food I do not eat much unless I am craving it. Chocolate/sugar are my major problems.

I stopped eating sugar on Monday. So far so good. Somebody suggested diet soda but a study says that even that tricks your body into thinking you are having sugar. It isn't good for you.

I realize there is sugar in everything processed but you can't totally get away from it unless you make everything yourself from scratch. I do like to cook and that will probably be my next move. Make everything from scratch.
