I know that we're getting way off topic here ... but I can assure you that a lot of the gamers that I know are perfectly capable of entertaining away from the computer/gameboard. Just using me as an example - I might not understand your jokes in French, but you might not understand the ones I make in German either; I listen to everything from Handel to KISS and pretty much everything inbetween, so I'm not lacking in classical-music knowledge; and I enjoy most art, from ancient to modern (although I admit, I hate politics and tend to stay out of those topics as much as possible).
Being a gamer doesn't mean that all we do is computer games. Nor does it mean that we're wasting time. A lot of the games that I, personally, play are puzzle games, and I feel they help keep my mind sharp because I actually do have to think - it's not just point and shoot (although those are fun from time to time as well).
I concur. I play both online and tabletop RPGs, and find that doing so actually enhances my capacity for creative thinking, which in turn provides a vast amount of material for the fiction that I write. The fact that I game doesn't mean that I can't hold a conversation on a wide range of topics from artistic to philosophical to political and beyond. I am an accomplished pianist/keyboardist, a passable percussionist, and a mediocre guitar and clarinet player, am well versed in reading music, and in classical, jazz, big band, show tunes, various forms of rock, etc. I am also fairly well versed in avant-garde fashion, visual arts and film-making (thanks to offspring and their mates who provide me with a wellspring of information on said topics -- often as we get together to table-game or MMORPG).
While there are those whose behavior is bounded by some activity they participate in, and while there may be good reason for some of the stereotypes that exist, I find it much less limiting, on a personal level, to find out about the -individual's- behaviors rather than attributing stereotypical behavior where it may serve no other purpose than limiting me from enjoying potentially pleasant encounters.
