Thank you for bringing up this topic. One of the things I've always been fond of Gorean's for was/is their ability to write properly and present themselves in a well spoken manner. For some reason when a post is full of spelling errors and improper grammar, especially run on sentences with not even a comma... my immediate thought is that they don't belong here and while that seems unfair and possibly rude to admit it's the truth. I too will be judged by the way I communicate (as quoted above). Days before I replied to this thread there was a male who wrote without any breaks in his sentences and a female who wrote net speak. I did not fully understand either post. I continue to be fond of those who take the time to write properly or close to. In my experience Goreans do take this time. Unfortunately, my brain is broken and I do not write as I once did. But I do take the time to be understood even though from time to time I'm misunderstood. My grammar isn't perfect anymore and my words are often backwards and my sentences sometimes are in the wrong place, I am however able to spell decently still and with that I hope helps others understand me. Nothing wrong with short hand, I use it on my Iphone and where appropriate. I wouldn't use it here, I just don't find it acceptable. I like reading people, but if I can't read them/understand them, I pass them by. Perhaps I just made no sense at all. Warm wishes, ~twinkle quote:

ORIGINAL: nephandi First off all your sample net speak sentence I understood nothing of. Now if you look around, the internet, if you are sending a letter to your boss requesting a raise, would you use l33t speech because you sent the letter as information over electrical signals rather than as a piece of paper? If you come into a more formal forum, or a forum occupied mostly by people over 40 do you see allot of l33t being used? What about the informational pages for hospitals, or on wedding invitations sent over mail, or on online shops? In fact l33t is not used on 90 percent of the internet. Now this forum is a written media to discuss with other adults. Originally l33t evolved as a way to write quicker massages on chat rooms, which could move very quickly and as a way to recognize other members of a subculture back when the internet was for those with a special interest in it and computers, and this way to write served a purpose then. It do not serve a purpose on an online forum filled with adults which for the most part have never been part of the subculture in question. The only place where I see a sure for l33t is in text messages on the phone where one have very limited space and time to send the message. However writing a post to this forum with a language that say, and indeed was developed for writing as quickly as possible just indicate to me at least that time and effort have not been given to the post. Now personally I do not mind an occasional lol and other such terms, but if l33t is used in every sentence, it both make the post hard to read and it also to me looks very sloppy. I wish you well. I'm not saying that it must be used, I'm saying if there ever were a proper place to use netspeak, it would be on a casual internet forum like this one. Note the use of subjunctive tense - I have more than rudimentary English language skills. I type over 100 wpm; saving a few milliseconds by removing a few letters to turn "seriously" into "srsly" isn't laziness, it's an intentional stylistic choice. Language is a means of expression. I remember being 14 aNd TyPiNg LiKe tHiS...a style that takes far more time and effort than typing like this does. To call that "laziness" or "ignorance" is off the mark. It's intentional, and while I have no problem with people judging the image that a person chooses to present, I do think they should judge accurately. Really, it's a matter of degree. The acronyms "IMO" and "WRT" wouldn't be out of place in professional communication, but they're netspeak. On this forum you find the common shortenings "FR" for fast reply, "OP" for original poster, "lol" and "rofl" - only a skip and a jump to get to "wtf" or "nm" or "idk" from there. I can only speak for myself, but if someone judged my use of netspeak as "ignorant" or "lazy" they would be basing their judgment on their own prejudices. Just skimming this thread again, the vast majority of posts are snark-worthy, if I were inclined to snark. I see a mess of misplaced apostrophes, over-perioded ellipses, improper paragraph formatting, misspellings and more. This is a post criticizing bad grammar: quote:

Where do I begin? I cringed when I first heard the song "If I Was A Boy," but the only time I write a post criticizing someone's misuse of standard English is when their own post was attempting to do the same. I don't believe anyone who uses "ppl" or "wut" is incapable of typing "people" or "what." It's one thing to not want to converse with someone whose stylistic choices annoy you, but to paint them as "lazy" or "ignorant" or "uneducated" is wrong. They are not failing in an attempt to use standard English; they are disregarding convention altogether.
