Hello Everybody,

I'd like to preface my question by saying that I am aware of how well crafted science fiction can 'capture' one's imagination. I read a particular Heinlein novel in high school; and, to this day, when certain friends want to get my attention. all they have to do is whistle a few bars of "The Ballad of Rodger Young." The Dorsai series was one that I enjoyed and "Soldier Ask Not" has a permanent spot in my book case.

I encountered the Gor series years ago. I was in Northern Arizona where I worked for a large unnamed Federal land management agency. I was assigned to a remote "guard station" along the Mogollion Rim above Sedona. Being so isolated, I was fortunate that the station had a well stocked library. There were a few Gor novels in the mix and I remember them as fun to read.

I am sorry to ramble; but, I want you to understand some of my background and the reason for my question. I really enjoy the way a writer can create a completely new world and bring it to life. So here is the question:

What is it about Gor that captures your imagination? Is there some generally accepted over-riding theme or truth that people find compelling? Is being Gorean something that you enjoy here on the threads or are there principles that you incorporate into your life?

That was more than one question. I'll stop now.
Sincerely,
Mike

Greetings

For me the philosophy and morality presented in the books, a mix of concepts from old cultures mixed with the author's own ideas, I find that fascinating.

I also love the way the books make me feel feminine. I am a tomboy, but reading the Gor books make me want to do my nails and be pretty. There is something liberating in the books as they sort of challenges me as a woman to look into the differences between me and a man and to celebrate being a woman. The books are so wonderfully non politically correct that they give you a bit of a jolt which makes me at least able to think in directions which never occurred to me before.

I am an occultist, a Chaote, I am also an immortality. I love the transhumanist aspects of the Gor books with the stabilizer serums, the books make good occult tools for me to use to do life extension rituals. Now this surly sound strange, I can explain it in more detail if you like however for a quick explanation, Chaotes believe there is no truth in reality, as such nothing is untrue either so fiction have great occult potential, the rituals I do is based on the same concept as the old like attracts like, for example plants shaped like hearts where used to treat heart conditions, and a rock shaped a little like a sleeping baby could be used to encourage fertility, I do the same but instead of stones or herbs I use elements of the Gor books as the symbols to attract that which I want.

I wish you well.

Thanks Nephani!

I am curious about your views of the philosophy and morality of the Gor world. "Wonderfully non-Politically Correct is a well turned phrase! I will investigate Chaote too. Is it Norse in Origin?

I do have one thing that I hope you find amusing. I thought that I had a pretty good idea of where you live. I was wrong. I Had Bergen confused with Trondheim.

Thanks Again,
Mike

For me I have been raised in a military family. I served in the military and I loved the values that I was brought up in. Honor, Courage, and Commitment. After the military I felt very and extremely lost. I still in a sense do for multiple reasons. The structure, and clear heirarchy (sp) were lost to me and things were... difficult to put it simply.

Fast forward a few years and I started to explore the world of bdsm and went to my first play party before any sort of munch or anything and sat around. My bdsm Mentor was having a ball and I couldn't see myself loving what she was going through but I was curious still and I definitely still felt submissiveness in my bones. Then cue a new friendship and I met a Man and his girl that both have become good friends. The man, the more I talked with, the more I found myself agreeing with much of his philosophies.

I started to get to know him, and volunteered to learn more about his rope work as I love attempting to get out of bonds. And the more time i spent with him the more I learned about him and of this strange new concept at the time of being Gorean. That was a couple years ago, maybe three? not sure. He started me on my path of learning the books and helped guide me away from certain things and is still to this day someone I know if I have a question I can contact him. I think of him as my Mentor and he knows this.

I'm not perfect, I'm far from it and I'm still learning so much more each day. Especially after this past Chicago Gor Gathering, I now know I can ask not only him but also his Mentor. And a joke was made of me being a granddaughter of sorts to his Mentor through the man I consider to be my Mentor. But what initially attracted me and pulled me into the Gorean Lifestyle, and has kept me in it and learning, was how close it was to my military values and what I was raised with not to mention the feeling I get from it.

Is the concept of Honor and integrity and of having the internal strength to not only live it but truly let yourself become what it is you seek. The structure and heirarchy is there. There's no double guessing. To me, I believe the exact words I used when I was first asked how I felt about it was... I feel like I'm coming home.

That feeling of being home, of being where I belong is largely the factor that has kept me here. That and I'm to stubborn to let those that are narrowminded about what Gor is and what a Gorean should be and deciding that I don't match that run me out.

Before I begin note that I am a woman so my views of morality and philosophy will vary from those of a man, I do not think men and women where meant to have the exact same morality, after all the menfolk where designed to be leaders, hunters and warriors where the womenfolk where designed to be nurturers, keeping the tribe together and tending the young, it is naturally that the way we view morality to be different. Also I am a former slave, and I did not take my freedom, it was given to me by my former Master so that to will color my morality.

The way I look at the Gorean morality is where dependability is paramount. Keeping one's word and being true to oneself is necessary to live with decency. For me the morality and the philosophy mix, I know I am explaining this poorly, I have never been good at explaining these things, however to me the Gorean morality and philosophy bottoms out in truth. Being true to oneself and one's own nature, stripping away the layers of society imposed civilization and finding the male and female animal at the core. Acting in a honorable way which in essence for me boils down into acting in a truthful way, being true to one's word, being dependable and being honest. Choosing one's life in a way which is true to oneself, and taking responsibility for one's own life. The Gorean philosophy for me is a total acceptance of who and what we are and then striving to improve ourselves in all ways we can for all we have is ourselves and the truths we make for ourselves to follow.

Thank you for the compliment.

No it is not, it is a modern occult path. Chaos Magick. There have been ideas along these lines for a long time, but it was only really put into system in the 1970's. To give a short introduction to it here is the Wikipedia article about it. Though if you want to discuss it some more I would be happy to do so. We Chaotes are easy to find by the way, just look for the guys the other occultists think are insane. :P

That is far better than I can do with cities of other nations, geography really is not my strong point. But yes Trondheim is quite a ways from Bergen. :D

I wish you well.

Thank You Selenity and Nephandi,

Clear cut values such as honor and integrity were values I observed in my father. When I fought wildfires, I learned about commitment and the value of heirarchy.

Frankly, in a world where people tend to blame others (The System, The Man, The Patriarchy) for their problems; it is refreshing to encounter people who believe in being true to, and taking resposibility for, themselves.

Thank you for taking my question in the spirit that I'd intended.
Mike

*laughs softly* Why thank you Grandfather Malkinius. And yes I realize now that every time I come over I will have to bring you deviled eggs. I see no problem in this. *smiles*
