I've always loved the song. Figured I'd never impress anyone with my income or stuff I have (or will have). And I decided a LONG time ago that if it took "stuff" to get someone interested in me, I didn't want anything to do with her in the first place. I can engage someone in a wonderful conversation, make pretty much anyone laugh, and I care a lot about the people around me. If a fancy car or high-paying job beat that, then let it.

FM, you should post this in the 'What Do You Offer' thread on the General BDSM board here: http://www.collarchat.com/m_3736359/mpage_1/tm.htm

I appreciate it, but it wasn't really an advertisement. That other thread seems more like one designed for people trying to get something out of their offer.

I haven't been courted enough to really know, but I think what does attract me (and therefore presumably it impresses me) is uniqueness. I like people who are different. I know everybody is unique, but usually you have to get to know them to find what makes them so different. I like the people who are different at first encounter. The ones who just be different.

I think the reason why you get sent those sorts of messages is probably because they listen to too much to Good Charlotte.

I haven't been courted enough . . .

I'm going to remember you used that phrase forever, Heather. And I shall never tire of reminding you of it!

Yes she is.

Unfortunately my method of courting would be to grab one handful of blonde hair and one handful of brunette hair and drag her and Hannah home to the farm with me!

that's something i can relate to. i'm generally more interested in what's going on in a person's head (and a preoccupation with how much "stuff" is a good indicator =p). what impresses me is thoughtfulness, intelligence, uniqueness -- what is it about this person that makes him stand out? energy, ability, a creative streak, blah blah blha.
someone who thinks a list of "this is what stuff i have" is going to impress me obviously doesn't know much about me and hasnt' really bothered to get to know me. plus... meh... i'm just not impressed by stuff.

Agreed. When I hear about people and their "stuff", THIS is what comes to mind. That, and it's just one more thing to clean.

So owning a yarn stash that could fly a kite to Mars is...off-putting? Oh dear!

see, the yarn stash, to me, is more of a reflection of the "creativity streak."i don't imagine you state it as if it alone is the reason someone should date you. =p
if someone talks about, say, a boat he has, but that boat is part of one of his passions, that's different than "yeah, i have a boat. you should be all over me by now."

Very few things that impess me, can be revealed in a letter or profile. So, I don't typically read things with the idea of being impressed or not. I do know that ostentatious behavior, in general, definitely doesn't garner any positive thoughts or feelings. The only thing that really captures my attention, in an email or profile, is a quirky sense of humor and the ability to express it in a concise enough way to capture and hold my attention. In person, kindness and generosity of nature impresses me. I am impressed by someone who stands up for what is right, and isn't swayed by group/crowd thinking. I'm not saying a mega carat diamond ring or necklace wouldn't be an impressive gift. But, just having the means to purchase a gift like that, isn't what is impressive.

Owning (and using) gobs of yarn tells me you're creative and that's sexy.

Owning a huge home and a fancy-assed car and you're the only one around to "enjoy" them tells me you have too much money to burn ( seriously...given the cost of heating/cooling) and not enough creativity...not sexy.

Easy, once you put it into perspective.

Oh thank goodness, because yanno...love me, love mah stash!! And I got most of it on closeouts and sales and such. I mean it's STILL wretched fiber excess, but there IS a certain cost-effectiveness built in.

And I'm sure in some way it acts as a type of insulation...which falls under the "multi-purpose" heading.

Well, that was the line I used when I had my wall of books.

Books as INSULATION, you say? Brill! Now come up with reasoning for the doll colection, the handbags, and...

So I have a lot of stuff. So?
