On an earlier post/question (Becoming a Gorean Master)  Iron Bear has written,  "Ahhhhmm I should add that by identifying as Gorean be prepared to develop a thick skin.. You will be a target for many of the Non Goreans and slaves are harder to come by too..."

My question is this, why is it so?

I go to a munch here in the UK, one of the first things I was told at the first munch I went to was that I would most likely see some things that I would not agree with, or how some people lived their lives, but I was also told that while I may not agree with what I saw, it was after all up to the people who were there, what they did and how they choose to live their lives.

So why then do people in the BDSM life style seem to view Goreans as almost outcasts, or a group of people to be sneered at or made fun of and by the same token  some on these boards seem to dismiss BDSM folk with distain.

After all we are each who we choose to be.

I personally feel that Gor is the way forward for Me, yes I am new to Gor, yes I still have a lot to learn, not to mention a lot of reading to do.

I would like to hear/read your thoughts on this question.

Some people lack the dedication to discipline. The people who scream and squawk about Gor most likely scream and squawk about the military, Masons, Lions, any structured organization that has an etiquette and protocol to be observed. The irony is the warm, open, and accepting BDSM community is often peopled with hypocrites that want to bash everything they do not subscribe to. There are soooo many dynamics I do not participate nor subscribe to, but TETO is the word... To Each They’re Own. You may find this link interesting

 Tal D,
The BDSM set tends to view Goreans with a jaundiced eye, because we don't "play" by their rules. we don't (as a whole, there are individual exceptions of course) do the whole pain for fun thing, we don't use safewords (The Master decides when enough is enough, in whatever activity is taking place) We don't tolerate SAM's, or bratty subs who want to "top from the bottom". We live, in reality as was intended, Male Dominant, ALL the time, not just pretend in some "scene". Females, even Free Women properly respectful and defferent to Men. We do not need some elaborate set and accesories to enjoy our girls, nor do the girls need anything, or anyone Other than their Masters to become completely responsive. And most of all, the BDSM tie me/spank me set can't handle the concept that being gorean is who you ARE, not just something you do. Take away a BDSM Master's sub, toys, activities, and he is no longer a Master. He may still have an interest, but it is the activity that defines him. A Gorean who releases/loses a slave does not cease to be Gorean. Indeed, Gorean Philosophy can be practiced as a lifestyle by a single man alone on a dessert island.
It's rather related to the reason in the books that Free Women hold slaves in such disdain.

                                                            I wish you well,

I'll give you a practical example QuietD, In my state and in Brisbane the BDSM Scene is severly fractured and disintegrating into bitchy cliques with the attitude of "It's my way or the highway" (Ok I'm generalizing but you get my meaning. However when I first joined on of the larger Groups and identified as Gorean I was ignored and booted within a week of joining and had not at the time met a single soul there. On a more practical lever in the CM side where the detailed profiles are,. there are a number of subs looking for Doms. To the best of my knowledge there are but two female slaves who are unowned and who may or may not relocate and again who may or may not accept a poly home.... That they are both some distance from me doesn't help.... All identifying as Gorean really means in the context I refered to in my post in the other thread is that there are far fewer submissives from which to choose.... It would have been easier to have just identified as M/s and even Victorian Household with much less trouble or heartbreak however that would have been dishonest as it would have been to have said nothing.. I have found that many BDSM folk can not understand thet you can be an experienced Gorean Master and yet be a newby to BDSM.....

Tal,

As ShreveportMaster has said above, it's a matter of following the rules. This is very important for the BDSM world for the safety of the submissives. Gorean tradition flies in the face of those rules.

I might add, however, that Gorean slaves don't (or shouldn't anyway) need that layer of protection. True, "according to the books" her Master could just kill her, but hopefully W/we can agree that on Earth that's not an option. And, unlike a BDSM scene, her Master isn't going to beat her for the sake of playing. At least I hope not.

And honestly, I suspect part of their objection is gender oriented. Gorean slavery is -- certainly not exclusively, but generally -- male domination of female slaves. BDSM is loaded with Dommes and submissive men as well as Doms and female submissives.

Additionally, in BDSM, many women draw a sharp distinction between "submissive" and "slave." No such distinction exists in Gorean slavery.

Well, those are my thoughts. Thanks for listening.

Tim
