The changes have, as far as I can tell, been directed at the problems in other parts of the board, which have at times been downright unuseable prior to the changes made. I'm inclined to assume any changes here are simply a matter of being consistent about the revised rules. It may well be detrimental to this smaller group, but it does seem kind of sensible to be consistent, even so.
As for the posting quality here, I missed the thread in question, largely because there's usually only something interesting here once a month or so, as opposed to the earlier state of affairs with good threads on a daily basis. I'm not up to date enough to analyze the issue, but I can add two observations. First, some posters are either no longer here, or very rarely here, while there have been several coinciding hiatuses. It's been noted elsewhere that the quality of any community depends entirely on the efforts of a few key members whose interactions form a potent base that supports a constructive discourse and largely sets the tone. Second, I essentially tuned out around the Aruthas/Star debacle or so. No matter how cool the song on the radio is, the listening experience degrades when it gets buried in static.
Perhaps it's time to do the roll call and then try to pen a solution? (Or, failing that, at least pinning the problem.)
