Lab emeralds don't move me, my real emeralds are very garden-y and that makes them fun to me. (the real fun is how incredibly cheap the ring was! yay vintage wholesale dude!) I like the absurd colors of lab rubies, and my alexandrite? Works JUST fine. Garnets are my favorite gemstone, though, always have been.
~
It might be that age thing again, but I was brought up to believe that certain gifts are "inappropriate" from the wrong parties. If my significant other bought me something valuable, I would be surprised and grateful (provided he could afford it). If someone I barely knew did, I would refuse politely, no matter how much money he had to back it up.

I think Lawrence from Office Space states it best in his "Two Chicks at the Same Time" speech:

Hang on, now I'm lost. DarkArt's a gemologist, Hib's an accountant, I'm an attorney. WTF? I thought 99% of us here were supposed to be welfare octomoms. Which ones are those again?

Um. Well, I think Forni has the most kids. But she's not on welfare, so, I think we all pretty much fail.

And MDA: MOISSANITE! Love it. (just a wannabe gemologist, but lover of minerals and jewels)

I love garnets too. I spent a hundred something dollars on a garnet pendant once. It was a big purchase for me.

Office Space. There is much goodness and wisdom in that film. Enough to make you forget the stupid parts.

You know how I initially read this? I read this as a judgment about the women, not him. I thought he was saying that he feels that the women in his life are simply not women that he could love. And I can understand that. I have a hard time finding fault with this. If he is well aware of what his priorities are then who am I to say whether his choices are correct? His is an unpopular view, yes. But I would like to keep my perspective broad enough to include the possibility that someone else's choice, though it may not be a valid option for me, may be the best choice for him.

When one views women like this, this is all one finds:

Oh, I agree. He might have that limited view even if he were banging the most selfless women in the world. I just don't think that he's entirely wrong. Some women, I'm sure, ARE like what he says. The thing is, he seems to be surrounding himself with those types of women. That would be his doing, and he could change that if he wanted to, but it just doesn't mean enough to him to do so, I guess. And if that's how he wants to live, and he's well aware of it (as he seems to proudly be), then bully for him. I'd rather it be a man that's up front about his love for his finances than a man who would only pretend to put me first.

Thing is, Kaliko, women like you and I would just steer clear of Scrooge McDuck! And those kinds of men show themselves early, whether they have wealth or not. It's one of the reasons I tell people to be themselves, because if they're a jerk, they need to let that out right off.

LOL!

Exactly, kalikshama.

And moreover, thanks for supporting my point about which gender these diamond ads target. In the case of Natan, it is beyond obvious.

I feel like cruising amazon for green moissanite now... there's a color that's like chrome diopside! Not as delicate, though, and somewhat cheaper.

Hubby bought me a three carat ring and, like you Hib, i was surprised and grateful. Then i told him to take it back. He told me to shut up.

He didn't take it back...and y'all know DAMN well i didn't shut up.

A few weeks ago i got a call from the LoudOnes school. The substitute teacher he has a major crush on informed me that the lil twerp gifted her with a huge diamond ring that looked rather....real.

If he wants to view women that way, that's fine - but I have issues with him coming on here and spouting off that ALL WOMEN are like that, when we have proven time and time again in this thread and others that none of the ones on this message board are what he claims. If he wants to live his sad, lonely, money-obsessed life - yay for him, but do NOT come here and claim that we are all like X, Y, or Z, because that's all he sees in real life (and he only sees that in real life because that's the attitude he gives off, so that's what he attracts).

And to add to the 'professionals' list - I'm an RN working towards a management position. No kids (unless you count the furry ones ... oh yeah, and we have PUPPIES!!!!!), and no welfare, no demanding money from random people, and quite happy with my house, yard, jewelry (which is minimal), etc.

Chrome diopside, green moissanite, alexandrite, cubic zirconia.

Far out. I'd never even heard of these. Are you sure you lot aren't making these all up? Is someone going to talk about the lustrous charm of brown bolloxite next?

Okay now I have been looking at jewelry. Hmph. With the price of gold, I'd be better off scrapping out current stuff and buying loose stones! Too bad I love vintage so much!

Personally, I love the spectral iridescence and heavenly luminescence of twatmanite, the most. I feel that it's spiritually uplifting to a gentleman's eyes as he gazes fondly at it as part of an exquisite necklace on the graceful decolletage of the lady of his dreams, especially if she has big knockers.

All quite real, Peon dear.

A little known factoid about moissanite LadyHib: you DON'T need a special tester to separate it from diamond. Even though it has similar thermal qualities that can fool a standard diamond tester, there's one thing it absolutely CAN'T do: be singly refractive as diamonds are. So use a standard 10x loupe, keep both eyes open (gemologist trick...you tend to only see out of the loupe-focused eye), look into the moissanite and check for doubling of the pavilion (pointy part on the bottom) facet lines. Depending on the axis it was cut, you may need to tilt the stone to a different angle to see it, but if it's moissanite it'll be there. Loupe your moiss some time and enjoy this cool property. Dang, gems are fascinating...and I dare say that's why people like them, not because sometimes they can cost a lot.

I haven't seen the green version; I'll have to check it out. The standard color is usually the equivalent of a J/K-ish diamond-they haven't perfected getting the color out yet as they have w/white CZ. But...adding something to green it up (probably chrome) would make a LOVELY stone full of brilliance and dispersion. At 9 on the MOH's scale (similar to sapphire/ruby) it's a nice, sturdy stone for rings.

Now back to feeling sorry for lonely, disillusioned SingleServ.

Thanks for telling Lady Hib about that, MDA. She's quite a simple sort of woman and doesn't know even such elementary things as this. I've become tired of explaining them to her, frankly.
