NHS doctors are prematurely ending the lives of thousands of elderly hospital patients because they are difficult to manage or to free up beds, a senior consultant claimed yesterday.

Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly.

Death Panels? Jolly good[8|] What an innovated approach to socialized medicine.

There are no death panels in the UK, still lets not let that stop your scaremongering huh.......

One view of a consultant on the eve of a day when consultants and Doctors are taking limited strike action for better pay.

The question is, whose decision is it whether one chases that extra day or not? Yours (if you can afford it) or the system (communal based, taxpayer supported, science dictated - say it as you wish) that's providing your care?

Best check your insurance policy.  Nothing you have in the US even compares with the NHS for universal care, nothing. [8|]

Hmm. I wouldn't normally bite at a scaremongering dailymail article but... is there really quality of life living forever? I mean, how many tablets would you be willing to keep you alive while you're body and mind slowly fails?

As many tablets as it took until such time as I no longer considered my quality of life sufficient.

Well, you can take all the tablets you want in the world, but nothing is stopping you from stroking out, losing your ability to communicate what you want as end of life care. Guess who will be deciding your fate? Your family & your treating medical team. Doesn't matter whether you're in Uganda or the US. If your prognosis is poor (as in no chance of getting back to your pre-morbid function).. chances are your treatment WILL be withdrawn. Or you'll end up in a high care nursing home.

If you have an issue with this, I highly suggest you find a good medico-legal lawyer and sit down and draft advanced directives.

Western cultures are generally have a lot of stigma towards death and dying, despite all the comforting religious rituals and prospects for people.

I'm certainly not saying withdrawal of treatment or euthanasia suit everyone, they need to be precisely decided and informed, but as a nurse, I am my patient's advocate and there is nothing more heartbreaking than watching someone die a slow, painful death.

The OP reminds me of the morally bankrupt arrogant idiots in the Terry Schiavo case......

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp058062

"The story of Terri Schiavo should be disturbing to all of us. How can it be that medicine, ethics, law, and family could work so poorly together in meeting the needs of this woman who was left in a persistent vegetative state after having a cardiac arrest?

Ms. Schiavo had been sustained by artificial hydration and nutrition through a feeding tube for 15 years, and her husband, Michael Schiavo, was locked in a very public legal struggle with her parents and siblings about whether such treatment should be continued or stopped.

Distortion by interest groups, media hyperbole, and manipulative use of videotape characterized this case and demonstrate what can happen when a patient becomes more a precedent-setting symbol than a unique human being"

Actually...Dr Quill is being very generous and kind to the douche-bags who butted the noses into the Schiavo`s intimate, personal tragedy.

They stopped using newspapers for that a while back.

Of course, the really funny thing about the neocon massive citing the Fail is the shitfits they come out with whenever anybody dares use Huffpo (or one of the other Marxist internet news providers who Mitt claims are picking on him) as a source.

uhh, could someone translate this into normal English?

My liberal hate-speech translator is off-line right now.[8D]

The UK's 'Daily Mail' only ever prints bollocks, FHKY.

I hope that helps.

mnottertail -> RE: But... But... that just cannot be (6/21/2012 3:05:16 PM)

while bollocks actually means testicles he means it in the sense of: nonsense, rubbish.

just translating the translator.

More for toilet paper old chap.

Speaking of which, my grandfather was poor and used to cut his newspapers into squares and hang them on a nail. At least on sunday visits I could go hide in the loo and read the paper in peace.

Lucylastic -> RE: But... But... that just cannot be (6/21/2012 4:40:35 PM)

LOL that sounds like my grandmother, had the old outhouse, freeze your ass off in the winter, but at least there was something to read:) then she changed to Izal, I preferred the newspaper.

Politesub53 -> RE: But... But... that just cannot be (6/21/2012 4:43:13 PM)

LOL @ Izal...... I thought we were posh when we moved onto that.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: But... But... that just cannot be (6/21/2012 5:19:09 PM)

slight hijack I had to google Izal, had no idea what it was and all I can say is wtf?!?! They took a disinfectant and decided to use in in a toilet tissue?

I did enjoy reading all the comments on the first page I found, folks going down memory lane about it.

Now I want to get a roll somehow, just to sniff it! Before use only though (lest someone mail me about a toilet fetish)

Lucylastic -> RE: But... But... that just cannot be (6/21/2012 5:30:11 PM)

Not only that but..... it was shiny, and nasssssssssty to use, we used to have it in school on a roll, at nans in a box like loo tissues...
It has as much absorbancy as aluminium foil!!!
:)

dcnovice -> RE: But... But... that just cannot be (6/21/2012 6:37:28 PM)

FR

Just Googled "Patrick Pullicino" (the doctor making the claim) and got few media results except the Daily Mail. You'd think such a major story would really have taken off.

Moonhead -> RE: But... But... that just cannot be (6/22/2012 3:21:34 AM)

If there was anything to the story in the first place, possibly.
(The only other sources for it I found were rightist blogs that just quoted the Fail piece verbatim.)
