I know large portions of the BDSM community does NOT condone edgeplay. As a general rule it is considered an unsafe practice which by all rights it probably isnt the safest thing in the world. BUT for those of us who are into it (inlcuding myself), I'd be interested in hearing from others about their experiences both good and bad and what precautions other people take to ensure safe, sane and conseual play. =D I have had only one experience with it when i was about 16 and it did get perhaps a little out of hand but then again I WAS 16. Its easy for a 16 year old to get carried away. No one was really inured seriously per se, but there was a little more bleeding than intended. I attribute that largely to inexperience and being an over-zealous teenager.

I'm assuming you are using the original definition of edgeplay what now is generally called cutting.  If so, it's not all that unusual a play style but one that definitely calls for education and care.  First off, I'd recommend you make yourself aware of and skilled in what the medical community calls "sterile technique."  There is a great deal of information on this in medical literature but it also has to be practiced in order to develop the proper psychomotor skills.  What seems simple and obvious when you are reading it becomes considerably more difficult when the drapes, scalpel and antiseptic actually have to be handled by a real hand.

Second, I strongly recommend a genuine surgeon's scalpel.  First, it's packaged sterile and second it's considerably sharper than any other generally available instrument.  You do not want to have to exercise significant force when you are cutting through skin.

Third, limit your cutting to surface cuts only.  You don't need to go deep and keeping the cut to a few millimeters keeps you away from a world of hurt.

Finally, learn anatomy.  Even surface cuts should be in areas where deeper cuts don't pose significant risks.

As with all play, but perhaps more so with cutting, keep in mind Murphy Lives.  Be prepared.

If you have an educational group in your area, check to see if they are offering any classes in this.  Learning in a face to face environment is superior by far to just reading a book.

Personally, if it was me, I wouldnt let anyone near me with a scalpel who hadnt been properly trained. Like John said, get yur partner and your self off to a demo or two or three...or four...

Master has cut me with a scalpel, drawn pretty pictures into my back, I dont consider it edgeplay, he is trained, I am sensible and keep still....its just a really intimate moment for us
