I thought it to be some hoax when it was reported on the radio, but the EU has won the Nobel Peace prize according to all available media reports, reportedly on the grounds they maintained the peace since WW2.

Is this merited? Many here have reacted with incredulousness, as opinions by various politicians and pundits are being reported.

So Europeans award themselves a famous prize for keeping internal peace for more then a generation?

May as well give almost every nation in the Americas the prize too, as most have not been at war internally or with their neighbors for in many cases centuries let alone a decade or two.

It's not a hoax. It's just fucking WIERD.

by their standards, you should give it to US and Canada. It's been 2 centuries since we've had a dustup.

They need to start giving out those,...."peace prizes" *Anonymously!*

Anaxagoras -> RE: The sound of one hand clapping (10/12/2012 12:14:59 PM)

It was a WTF experience when I saw the news as well. It was an extremely bizarre decision. Its pretty hard to say the EU brought about peace. The early trade deals on coal and steel between France and Germany helped foster a spirit of co-operation after all the animosity caused by the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 and World War I but soon the EEC/EU ballooned into a major bureaucracy, which bore little resemblance to the original entity, and become a forum of intra-state wrangling. France prevented the UK and Ireland from entering until 1973 because it was afraid of a new anglo-hegemony, Greece held the EU to ransom in the 80's, Spain got to violate national waters for fishing, and everybody now seems to be Germany's bitch. The following is the English translation of the award text -

quote:

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012 is to be awarded to the European Union (EU). The union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.

"In the inter-war years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee made several awards to persons who were seeking reconciliation between Germany and France. Since 1945, that reconciliation has become a reality.

"The dreadful suffering in World War II demonstrated the need for a new Europe. Over a seventy-year period, Germany and France had fought three wars. Today war between Germany and France is unthinkable. This shows how, through well-aimed efforts and by building up mutual confidence, historical enemies can become close partners.

"In the 1980s, Greece, Spain and Portugal joined the EU. The introduction of democracy was a condition for their membership.

"The fall of the Berlin Wall made EU membership possible for several Central and Eastern European countries, thereby opening a new era in European history. The division between East and West has to a large extent been brought to an end; democracy has been strengthened; many ethnically-based national conflicts have been settled.

"The admission of Croatia as a member next year, the opening of membership negotiations with Montenegro, and the granting of candidate status to Serbia all strengthen the process of reconciliation in the Balkans. In the past decade, the possibility of EU membership for Turkey has also advanced democracy and human rights in that country.

"The EU is currently undergoing grave economic difficulties and considerable social unrest. The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the EU's most important result: the successful struggle for peace and reconciliation and for democracy and human rights. The stabilizing part played by the EU has helped to transform most of Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.

"The work of the EU represents "fraternity between nations", and amounts to a form of the "peace congresses" to which Alfred Nobel refers as criteria for the Peace Prize in his 1895 will.

Anaxagoras -> RE: The sound of one hand clapping (10/12/2012 12:53:25 PM)

Sounds a bit suspect. Greece became a democracy in 1975. Spain and Portugal did around the same time. They only came into the EEC in the early to mid 1980's. Mind you the transition to democracy often has teething problems so maybe the EEC encouraged the process but it can hardly claim credit for the transition from totalitaranism. [8|]

Prediction: Canada annexes Alaska, Canada wins as the US can't afford to go to war but it is a pyrric victory because the US succeeds in bringing Canada to its knees economically by banning back bacon and maple syrup imports! Sensing an opportunity, Greenland invades Canada and a bloody war of attrition ensues. [8D]

They gave it to Obama. What's so suprising that they gave it to the EU ?

One or more members or the EU were involved in each of those (Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Iraq) wars during the time between the end of WW2 and today along with many other wars, so that apparently is no impediment.

HillWilliams suggestion that Canada and the US should get the award has been improved by a Canadian who suggested NAFTA and its predecessors should be given the award for preventing Canada, the US and Mexico from going to war for 60 years,

And the Commonwealth of Nations and the English Queen should get an award also, you haven't heard of any wars between Jamaica and Belize or Australia and New Zealand have you?

Some of the criticism, especially from the English and the Russians, has been both humorous and severe.

They certainly haven't given it to W or Hitler, so it does remain somewhat reasonable.  Part of the issue here is the equivocation of what the statement of purpose of the peace prize is.

They've given it to far worse. I hear on the grapevine that a Mr. Ahmadinejad is a strong contender for next year's peace prize... [:)]

I meant with each other. Context lad, context. The whole thread is that the EU got the award because they've refrained from cheerfully slaughtering each other for a few decades.
Now does it make more sense?

You is just jealous because you didn't get a share of the prize money.

Most people will see this as a political reminder to the European people (at a time of crisis) that it is better to be in the EU than out of it. It really has nothing to do with anything else.
