Sorry I wasn't clear. I was using that as an example of how some doctors are very quick to pull the trigger on surgery and was talking about this in the context of my GYN issues, not your thyroid issues.

I'm curious to hear what happens to your request for the FSH test, as my second opinion person drilled into me that it is only valid when taken the first or second day after your period starts...and you're not having periods.

Has your Endo or anyone else said anything about female hormone supplementation?

Ah....ok, I did misunderstand about your comparison.

I've had other doctors tell me the FSH test is unreliable but never discussed in relation to periods. Personally I would think that a hormone deficiency is a hormone deficiency but who knows. I'm going back to my regular doctor today after not having had proper insurance for a year or so. He was my doctor for quite a few years and if there is a valid reason NOT to do certain blood work, he's very honest about it. One of the reasons I like him is because we go over tests and everything thoroughly and he actuallly listens to what I say.

I will update everyone tonight about what he thinks re: thyroid removal.

UPDATE:

Well there really isn't an update lol. My transportation to the doctor was horrifically late, so I had to reschedule the appointment to Monday. Hopefully, the same problem won't happen again, although I'm not terribly optimistic.

I wasn't aware that they removed thyroid glands for malignancy any more as Thyroid cancer was the first disease that was able to be treated by targeted radionuclide therapy.

I suppose they are going back to surgical therapies since all the sources for radio-pharmaceuticals in the U.S. have been shut down and the expense of buying internationally is quite high.

No, I don't work in Oncology. Yes, I work in radiation protection and read the trade journals.

I asked about radio active iodine to reduce the nodule and he said it was too large. From my own research, it seems that the iodine (and I assume any other radiation) would render the thyroid useless anyway, and the patient would then need life long thyroid replacement medication. Given those facts, it seems senseless to put someone through radiation treatment and the side effects it causes when they can remove the tyroid and get the same result without putting the patient through unnecessary, longer term treatment that wil make the patient sick.

To be clear, the biopsy in 2010 was benign. I have yet to find out the status at this time.

RAI- generally is used in conjunction with surgery- if there is any question of whether the surgery "got it all". But...RAI is no picnic either. Generally you have to be secluded for a long time while you are doing it, it totally wipes out the thyroid, just like surgery, however- you have the effects of, you know, radioactive iodine to go along with the effects of no longer having a thyroid- basically either way- its rough.

My point exactly, shiftyw. Since RAI or surgery is going to leave a person without any thyroid hormone, there really isn't a point to putting a person through any type of radiation treatment unless absolutely necessary.

So I finally saw my primary Monday. At first, he was just backing up the endo saying he knew more. When I told him that the endo said I should have it removed so that I didn't have to bother with contual ultrasounds and biopsies, he wasn't so much in agreement, and encouraged a second opinion.

I want to get my bloodwork done before going to 2nd endo so he has most recent results. Primary did mention that many people with hyperthyroid have it removed. Of course there is the question of whether this is an active nodule or not as well.

So far, I'm still leaning towards another biopsy, 6 month ultrasound and possibly medication (based on bloodwork results). Should the 2nd endo feel removal is also best, I'm not sure what I will do.

Primary said I need a gynocologist to order FSH, and that even if he ordered it, since he isn't GYN, he wouldn't know what to do with the results. I don't have a regular GYN, but they have added two to their groups, so I'm thinking of making an appointment so I can get the bloodwork order.

I also got referrals. Podiatrist for the plantar fasciitis, urologist for the kidney stones, orthopedist for my spine injuries, gastroenterologist for my intestinal issues and psychiatrist so I can get therapy meds again since the doctor and APN where I get counseling have been woefully lacking. Add to that the GYN, dentist, pain management specialist, and physical therapy for my foot and I already feel like a pin cushion wh is going to be poked and prodded into the spring season.
