Ededasanddomino -> Dungeon electric hoist in power failure.... (2/3/2016 4:43:34 AM)

We have installed an electric hoist, the type commonly used in clubs and professional dungeons, really intended for lifting car engines, in our club.

One of the things we have had to consider is what happens is their is a power failure. The sub is hung by her ankles, the power fails, the lights go off and the hoist DOWN control doesn't work anymore. How do you get your sub back to safety?

Inevitably, if you are doing the upside-down-by-her-ankles thing, the ankles will be strapped to each end of a cross bar, itself hanging from a shackle in the centre. You can barely reach each ankle strap, and if you undo one, that leg will fall, that end of the cross bar will swing upwards, the other down, with her other ankle, and she'll break her head or her neck, or both, as she hits the deck.

I'd like an electrical solution, such as an uninteruptible power supply (UPS) which will give a battery back-up for ten minutes while you sort things out. As yet, I haven't found one that will take a motor load. For the time being, we have a safety plan in place which involves bringing other furniture already nearby underneath the hanging girl, so that she can take some of the weight and have something to hang onto whime being let down. Roping the bar end to stop it swinging up out of control is also in the emergency plan.

If you use or install such hoists have you thought about what to do when it goes wrong? Have you any bright ideas?

Back up generator to run that, a few lights and the refrigerator. As replacing a full fridge's worth of food is expensive.

Have a hand chain hoist as a backup plan.

You will need to have some type of mount above the lift area. Usually a ring bolt that can support the weight. Or some type of pulley system. Hook the hand chain hoist into the same lifting ring as the electric hoist. Once that is done you can life the person a little higher to take the tension off the electric hoist cable and unhook it. Then manually lower the person down.

We use quick release connectors between her suspension cuffs and what holds her up. Have a strong enough table to place her upper body on. Simply pull the table in place. Place her upper body on it and take steps to insure she doe not fall off as you release her from the suspension. Perhaps take her arms and secure them to the table.
When ready, pull on the quick release and she is safe.

Another possible way of doing it is to exchange the hoist for one of the type of winches used on the front end of 4WDs, which is what I have got and I use a 12 volt battery charged by solar power to power it, so in this part of the world the thing is usually fully charged.

many comercial hoists have a manual option check and see if yours has one its likely a square hole on one side made for a crank handle. whith the handle in place aply tention to the drive gear and move the ratchet lock allowing the handle to take the load then using the handle lower the load.

At the Citadel, they have a backboard for people to support someone who is suspended if something goes wrong, but a winch sometimes goes too high for people to be able to reach in that situation. I agree that some sort of backup power or manual crank option would be wise.
