Okay, someone gonna have to explain what's the deal about socks.

I've seen the word in several threads, as well as sockpuppet, used pejoratively so I have an idea more or less... but where did the term come from and what's the difference between say, sock and troll?

It's an account created by someone that already has an account to either circumvent moderation, make it appear that another poster supports the original account or to spam the forums.

So, sock puppet is the right idea.

Stick around long enough so that you know the regulars, and then you'll soon know when sock sneak in. You see the people that do this like to think they are clever, but here's the thing; socks are generally like lies, the longer it goes on, the more it unravels. Either they trip themselves up by posting in exactly their usual style, whinge about all the same old crap they have before, or they really lose their shit and forget which account they are logged in as and post as the opposite account, or all of aforementioned.

Just for fun, there's a difference between a troll and a sock.

What most people (in my opinion) refer to as an internet troll is somebody that tends to use inflammatory statements to rile other posters up. However, they tend to do so from their own screen name and often have semi-logical reasons for their positions. One thing I have to give credit for when it comes to those that some would put in the 'troll' category. They are smart. They stand by their opinions. They also tend to have some semblance of backing up their own side of debate.

Socks have something of the opposite stance. These are the folks who create profile after profile trying to make it *seem* that there is agreement with a certain position because they are attempting to bolster their own defense. Usually because their position on <insert whatever topic X here> is so completely worthless that the only way to make it *look* like someone agrees with it is to create a new screen name to use on the same thread to say, "yeah, bro, I agree with you".

(I actually used to love it when the former administration used to call people out on this during threads, saying 'only one screen name belonging to an individual was permitted'. They didn't get all of the socks, but it was great when they let people know somebody was just trying to be a d*ck.)

The other use for sock puppets has become more frequent in the last few years and that is an individual creating additional screen names for the purpose of stalking, harassing, or threatening people (at minimum) online. Basically, these are (again) cowardly folks who hide behind a computer screen, but some of them can actually be dangerous. They aren't the most balanced of individuals from a mental health perspective, and we have some of them on this site.

Ever heard the old country expression "no matter how hard you try, you can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh^t"? More often than not, those are your sock puppet people.

The majority of them I believe are split between two posters. There are a few other random socks from guys that got put on "Awaiting Approval" and haven't been removed.

Are these socks ongoing personas, or is somebody just inventing a new identity every time they log in?

You know I have been thinking about this question since I saw it posted.

And it is a good question.

So to answer:

if the item in question goes up to the thigh and held in place by a garter or garter belt, it is a stocking.

If it has a seam going up the back, it is a stocking

If it resembles a fishnet, it is a stocking, unless of course it is a fish trap (which begs the question, can you use fishnet stockings to catch fish?)

Now, I have seen packaging listing items I would have considered stockings as socks, leggings or anything but a sock, so I can understand the need for the question the op posed.

There is no persona - he just randomly posts crap to disrupt the forums and most of it is cut and paste

FWIW....the best sock generator was Arpig.....who sadly needed and is hopefully getting some professional help........but those of you who remember.....his socks (some at least) were a real hoot.....
