To DaddySatyr: while I won't belittle Your choice in religion, I will say only this, Your god (I refuse to cap that word, my preference) and I have never seen eye to eye. Especially after the death of my son some 20 years ago, he was only five.

OK, so in the hour or so since you posted this thread, did you actually mourn any of the people who died in the time that elapsed? No? Was that because you didn't feel connected to them over and above the fact that you and the newly deceased happened to be humans that share the earth?

I happen to think kiwisub nailed it about the emotional manipulation card. However, that doesn't really work unless people are invested in some way. You might find a common issue, such as losing a child or issues that you have for being trans* or for severe clinical depression. However, as much as I'm sure people will dislike me for saying it, other people still make emotional bonds with others *despite* those issues. They don't just show up after years of absence and expect others to leap out of their chairs because somebody has come to the conclusion that suicide *IS* an option. Whether it's a *GOOD* option or not, isn't for me to say.

The only good thing I can say? It might be a good idea to go back to your therapist. That's the person who is trained in what you are dealing with.

I rarely discount suicide ideations as bogus, because ive learned otherwise.
But when someone uses manipulation like that it reeks of pity hunting. Rightly or wrongly.
I dont remember the poster, but the issues, I suggest you get in touch with someone soon.

Feeling suicidal, can often be helped by calling an anonymous person, especially in the darkest hours of the pit.
Help yourself until you can find someone who will see you more than once.
But please dont use manipulation like that.
It turns people, even the most compassionate, off.

I would highly suggest talking to Suicide Prevention or finding a support group. Sometimes the best person to talk to is someone that has been in your shoes.

My sister in law shot herself in the head. My brother found her, in their living room, just a few moments later. He's traumatized for life after finding her that way. Her decision has fucked him up for the rest of his life. Did she have the right to do that?

Not to mention, she left her 10 year old daughter without a mother.

This will probably sound snide and dismissive, but WTF:
"Ultimate" means last. Final. I would never dream of questioning anybody's right to give up because life has disappointed and failed them on every level, but it's still the last resort. It isn't an expression of autonomy it's the end of the world. It should never be considered lightly. However bad the alternatives are, while there's still alternatives, there's some sort of hope yet, surely?
It's your choice Alison and I would hope that nobody on here would try to deny you that, but please, be sure there's nothing else left before you turn to that.

Yes, she did. It was her life. Did she end it irresponsibly? Yes, but it was still her life to live or not, as she deemed best.
Perhaps if we, as a society, did not try to reinforce such a stigma to suicide there would be better methods, less traumatic for those left behind, available, but the lack of such opportunities does not alter the simple irrefutable fact that it is my life and you have no right, legal, moral, or ethical, to insist I continue to live it if I do not wish to do so. Nor do you have any right, legal, moral, or ethical, to judge my reasons for deciding to live or die.

Op, if SSRIs don't work, try ECT.

I spent 20 years fighting that dark cloud daily. I tried a couple of times.

It lifted in my late 20s and returned 15 years later with a vengeance. That was after the development of SSRIs which do work for me.

But I was very clear with my psychiatrist that I simply didn't have the energy to keep struggling. He said that for those who do not respond to medication, ECT frequently did help.

I would have done that without a blink of an eye. I'm not willing to return to that joyless place that my genetics sentenced me to.

For me, one drug is not enough.
It took a combination of meds.

And if this hadn't worked then I probably would have tried ECT next.

You have to decide. Every day. Sometimes several times a day. You can stay. Or you can go. But if you go, that's it. No redo. You don't get to find out what the future holds. Because you've cashed that in.

I just turned 54, I've been making the decision since I was 16.

I wonder what tomorrow will be like?

I'm not sure the language of rights--touching on legal/moral principles and requiring careful balancing of interests--is particularly helpful in charting the hellscape of acute depression, where hope and perhaps even reason itself have vanished.

I have to do talk therapy with my meds, and lately that's not enough.

I have to walk, fortunately I have a dog now, so he makes me walk. He's also extremely relaxing for me. When I do grounding now- it nearly always involves him as "something I can see/touch".

There's loads of online resources better than this forum.

Support groups are great.

I promise I battle with myself everyday, even on the meds.
