TheBanshee -> IMDB boards are shutting down (2/7/2017 5:59:01 PM)

Is anyone else here one who loves to read and maybe participate on the internet movie database boards to discuss anything from Doctor Who to Casablanca? The IMDB website is shutting down its message boards. I'm so bummed.

Greta75 -> RE: IMDB boards are shutting down (2/8/2017 3:43:38 AM)

I love to read IMBD forums endless debates on my favourite shows. GOT, Vikings, SuperGirl etc.

Gonna miss it! I am somebody who love reading spoilers for movies before watching a movie. So usually I'd be reading every single detail about the movie, and all the spoilers in the forums and what the debates are about, before I go watch the movie. So I know what to expect on every part of the movie. I am gonna miss doing that! Can't think of where else I could read about these stuffs.

And I am blaming Liberals for this! Amazon owns it.

There is this theory that as IMDB was a haven for Trump supporters to spread Trump's message and help Trump win the election.

So they are shutting it down as most other forums ban Trump supporters, which gives them no space to for their alternative to liberal views. There is even this joke that Trump supporters really can really only lurk in StormFront Forums now.

Considering majority of IMDB viewership are Americans, they also believe IMDB Forums may have helped Trump win with Positive Trump posts. Alot of silence lurkers who read but don't post. They have 250million viewership after all.

But the gist of it is, I think because of this polarising world now. Pro-Trump and Anti-Trump, the abuse in the Forums are getting unmanagable. So it's too much work for them to moderate anymore. And don't think they earn anything keeping forums alive.

So they are encouraging people to use alternative like twitter or facebook and let these organizations moderate.

Amazon is liberal, seriously?
A company that's owned by a libertarian wannabe monopolist and treats its staff like shit is representing which liberal values, exactly?

This will probably be where most people will migrate to eventually. Similar to IMDB, has forums for every movie and programs. I expect it to get more popular as time goes by. IMDB is gonna regret this decision. Especially when they got a paid version for the Pro, and many are cancelling their subscription too. As why should they pay if they don't even get forum features anymore.

And did you really need to bring your delusional politics into an off-topic thread about movies?!

The closing of the Forums was politically motivated. It's related.
It's not about movies.

It's about the closing of the IMDB Forums. Where if you frequent even their individual forum, there is politics discussed in almost every movie or TV Show forum.

So do Kim Jong Un, Li Keqiang, Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush. They aren't liberals either.

I don't think it is verified that any of those two Asian folks hate Trump. Kim Jong Un especially, we just assume he automatically hates everybody equally.

But Ted has made up with Trump it seems.

And Jeb supports his education chair choice. First sign of peace.

Well here you can find all things Doctor Who. So if you ever are in London then take a trip on the District line to Upton Park, turn right outside the station and do a left turn at the Bolyn pub and walk 50 meters and you see the shop on your left.

RIP IMDB Boards.

So like today, I just watch Lego Batman yesterday and watched the latest episode of Supergirl and curious about The Kingdom, when it is coming, the next Season.

And usually I would go into IMDB Forums to look at these things. And read the discussions on these programs.

And today, I feel so lost.

I went to the other site that is copying IMDB but it's still a graveyard. Not much on Super girl. Not much on Lego Batman.

Sucks!

Now it's like almost you gotta source for different places for different programs to find where the people gather to discuss these programs.

FR

I watched an old episode of Poirot last night, and one loose end was itching me.

I instinctively went to IMDB to check out the boards and was bummed to remember that they've been obliterated. [:(]

Even if they don't allow new posts, couldn't they at least have left the old ones?

jlf1961 -> RE: IMDB boards are shutting down (2/21/2017 8:03:21 AM)

The closing of the IMDB boards had nothing to do with politics, it had to do with cost.

Amazon who owns the IMDB has had a bit of a financial SNAFU of late, so since the boards were not a money maker, they saved money by killing the boards and the server that had them.

This was after trying to get others to take over the boards.

The others were TCM, the Warner internet movie collection and a couple of others, including HBO.

The boards were primarily funded by advertising, and internet based advertising is set by volume on the site. The boards user volume had dropped so the advertising income had also dropped.

So Amazon was left covering the cost of keeping the server access, the unused bandwidth to that part of the server etc.

And those companies charge for the TOTAL possible bandwidth usage, not how much actually hits the server.

For instance a t3 server line can cost between $3000 and $12000 a month, and fiber optic trunk access five times as much.

Now if you are not getting the usage on that server to justify that cost, you are being charged for unused bandwidth.

Now, Amazon did flirt with offsite data storage service a while back and decided not to go into it, but it would have easily covered the cost of the server line to the servers in question.

However the cost of administration and IT people to baby sit a mainframe is expensive.

Amazon's big mistake was putting the IMDB on a server they did not own, and it ended up biting them in the financial ass.

If it had been a strictly politically motivated move, they could have, like three wargaming sites I use, shut down the section of the boards that did not pertain to movies or discussions of movies.

The three wargaming sites shut down the sections of their boards that people used to voice political views and rants.

My personal opinion, if the site is not a strictly social networking site, politics and religion should be left out of the discussions.

It would be like discussing hockey at a PGA conference as a main issue.

Rational and sensible arguments, effendi.
When do those have any impact on butthurt whining from Trump fans who can't accept that anything on Earth isn't caused by nasty liberals picking on their chosen professional victim?

Clearly you don't browse IMDB Forums often. Every section of their boards has Politics in it!
The entire Games of Thrones Board is pure political.

In IMDB, it's very common for people to post, OT: (Insert Political subject) in almost every board, regardless the purpose of the forum.

It's not a Forum that penalise people for not sticking to the purpose of that Forum section. Thus Politics always run crazy in there and everywhere.

But I have say, it was one of the best Forums ever. Never lags ever. Always Fast to Load. RIP!

Hi. On a related note, would anyone know how to get an accurate list of foreign movies. For example if you want a list of all "French" movies made between 1980 and 2010. It used to be you would go into advanced search and select "French" as the language, but I've done that maybe a dozen times in the last hour and keep getting crap. Instead I get movies like X-Men: Days of Future Past, the tv series Lost that aired on ABC many years ago, Pulp Fiction.. .. In theory changing the country of origin would fix the problem but nope. Love Actually, the Liam Neeson movie Taken, etc, appear as results. Basically, it seems like even if there's one word of any foreign language the advanced search will include it in the results for that language. If one second of the movie was filmed in the country, same thing. And or if the movie is popular enough to be released in that country that could be why it shows up in the results.

I want a list like
Leven met je ogen
Lèvres bleues, Les
Maintenant ou jamais
Marchand de sable, Le
.. ..

There may be other sites that offer results, but imdb has usually been the go to for movies. And if the language or country is less common..

*The 1977 Steven Spielberg movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind appears among the results for Hindi [language] movies. I guess I'm fluent in Hindi then as I thought it was an English speaking film [okay, haven't actually seen it, but I know of it and it's a cult classic I thought]

CaptR -> RE: IMDB boards are shutting down (3/8/2017 5:32:18 AM)

That comes as a surprise. My niece is listed on there.

CaptR -> RE: IMDB boards are shutting down (3/8/2017 5:36:13 AM)

Google French films between 1980/2010. Wikipedia comes up and lists them in chronological order. I don't think it's a complete list and some may be remakes but there are original releases listed.

kkaliforniaa -> RE: IMDB boards are shutting down (3/8/2017 7:44:33 AM)

Not helpful. I was using French as an example. And as I mentioned, imdb has become the go to for anything movie and tv related. Let's say I wanted a list of all British shows ever made. As you said so yourself, CaptR, Wikipedia most likely doesn't have a complete list compared to imdb. Same goes for if I wanted a list of Hindi movies, Korean tv shows, etc etc. I'm sure the Wikipedia article you mention was created using information from.. Wait for it.. Imdb.

Plus, as I think I mentioned, users used to be able to search by language. Technically they still can, through advanced search, but the examples from my previous post were among the results I got, which isn't what I wanted. If I do a search for Mandarin, among the first results [since populararity is the default option] should be Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, I think. Not How I Met Your Mother [the CBS tv series]
