Years ago, when I was much wealthier, I had huge a crush on a sub (not slave). And she was crushing on me as bad as I was on her. But her manners were atrocious... all that bad vanilla and D/s protocol she was used to, like that negotiation crap, granting permission and expecting me to explain everything in advance. Grant me permission... seriously? I was used to M/s protocol... tolerating her bad manners would have hurt our relationship and the way I felt towards her. I would have wanted to kill her.
To me, negotiating, explaining and gaining permission is insulting and means you don't trust me. I am very smart and I give good relationship. Often the unknown and surprise is part of what I do. If you don't trust me, fuck off and find someone you do trust. But she was smart, kinky as hell, had HUGE tits and was gorgeous. Seriously hot chick, as in posed for girly magazines and modeled. And she was smart as a whip... professional writer generating articles for magazines.

At the end of 90 days, I would symbolically "buy" her collar from the Domme in trade for setting her up with a distributorship, some cash and $10,000.00 worth of inventory. I never would have made through the rough spots in her training without the help of that Domme. So the 10 grand was well spent being I had that much to spare without effort and I got many years of happiness in return for my investment.

Speaking theoretically, I don't even see how $10k could be considered steep, considering that that's pretty much what a trained and purebred horse goes for.
Only with a horse, now you're endlessly pouring more money in.
With a legitimately bought slave -who'll presumably obey you- you now have a valuable asset on which you can turn a profit. Even if your slave is only qualified to make minimum wage, you should be able to recoup your investment in less than a year.
Put in the extra investment of a little more training, and you should easily be able to make more than that.
Heck, in 1860 the average slave would be about $400, which, computed to today's value, is around $40k. At the price the OP think it's steep, you're actually getting your slave at an over 75% discount!
Legality permitting, I'd buy slaves at $10k all day long and would soon retire from doing anything but managing them.
