I'm speaking from experience, considering that I emigrated to the US myself for a relationship that got started on CollarSpace.
You have basically 4 options:
- An investor visa, which will require your slave to bring a large amount of capital into the country, start a company, and create new American jobs.
- A student visa, which will require your slave to be full time enrolled in an accredited American college, during which time you can 'date' and make sure you really want to live long term. This option is only available if he actually attends school (with all it's associated costs) and he will not be allowed to work during his studies.
- A work visa, which will require him to find a US employer willing to sponsor him. His employer will need to be able to show that they are unable to find US employees to fill the same position, which means you're basically out of luck on this one unless he's in a high demand field, a full list of which you can find here: http://www.h1base.com/content/h1boccupations
If your slave doesn't qualify for any of these jobs, there's basically no chance of him getting a work visa. If he does qualify, the process will still take years.
- A marriage/fiance visa. Which will require you both to be legally married, which all that this entails. On a fiance visa, your slave will be allowed to be in the country for 90 day, within which period you need to legally marry him.
You will need to show that you make enough money annually to be above the poverty line for your State (usually $20k-$30k).
More importantly, you, as the sponsoring American citizen, will also be required to sign a document (called an Affidavit of Support) which holds you legally responsible for providing your slave with financial support (including being liable for all his debt) until he has worked for 40 quarter (a minimum of 10 years) in the US. Divorce does not alleviate you of this responsibility.
Your slave could come here, be married to you for 2 years (the legal minimum for him to be eligible for permanent residency, which means he could stay in the US even after he divorces you), divorce you, quite his job, go on welfare, and you would be legally held responsible for covering his welfare, as well as any debt he incurs.
If he never works a total of 40 quarters, you will be held financially responsible for him forever. Even if you have been divorced for 20 years, even if you remarry to somebody else.
Think long and hard before signing an Affidavit of Support. Personally, I would recommend against it under all circumstances. I recommended against it when my husband signed it (though so far it has worked out for him). No sane person would ever sign such a document, but if you don't, a marriage visa is out of the question.
All these options are expensive. Be prepared to spend several thousands of dollars in visa fees by the time all is said and done, and that's without hiring an immigration attorney.
Also be aware that just getting residency via a marriage visa will not permit your slave to work. In order to get a work permit based on his temporary residency status based on your marriage, he'll have to separately apply for one. Usually they're always granted, but the process of doing so requires another $500 (or so) in fees, and the work permit will need to be (including repaying the fees) renewed every few years, until your slave becomes a citizen.
