Dick Gregory opened my eyes at a very young age.
He did it with a joke.

Band Aids were made of cloth tape with a pad inside.
Then they started using plastic and they came in colors.
They came in colors and patterns, and they came in a
pale pink color which they marketed.

Dick Gregory said he walked into a drugstore the other
day and told the woman behind the counter;

"Hello, I would like to purchase a box of those new flesh
colored band aids."

Whoa! I had never thought of that when I had heard the
marketing for "flesh colored" band aids. I had been oblivious.
What about; Asians, Latins, Indians, what else had I been
oblivious to? Dick Gregory opened my eyes. I am grateful.

On a side note it was Hugh Hefner who moved Dick Gregory
into a "main room" at a Playboy club and opened the door to
major gigs all over the country. This was before any other
black comic had played a major room as a stand up comic.

After Gregory was a success there he could of had a gig at
major rooms in Vegas, or anywhere in the country, he could
of had it all. Instead he made the choice that civil rights and
other issues were more important. He did walk his talk. The
record shows he sacrificed for his beliefs.

The joke that Hefner heard that made him decide to give Dick
a booking in the Playboy club was this one.

"Last time I was down South I walked into this restaurant and this
white waitress came up to me and said, "We don't serve colored
people here." I said, "That's all right. I don't eat colored people.
Bring me a whole fried chicken."

Then these three white boys came up to me and said, "Boy, we're
giving you fair warning. Anything you do to that chicken, we're gonna
do to you." So I put down my knife and fork, I picked up that chicken
and I kissed it. Then I said, "Line up, boys!""
