My guess is you missed it because you don't go there often.

Jerry Lewis of course started and rose to fame as the comic sidekick/partner of Dean Martin. As a performer in this country he was never allowed out of that "box".
I have read that in Europe he was very respected as a movie director. His work against MS speaks for itself.

In the movie "Boeing Boeing" he was sidekick to Tony Curtis, but in a much more mature role than his usual Dean Martin paired roles. In "King of Comedy" he was completely out of the sidekick zone.

That is true but you must realize that by the time "King of Comedy" was made the movie going audience had changed from the "Martin and Lewis" days.
Also, I have no direct knowledge but I would bet that the money was there for that movie was there because of Martin Scorsese and De Niro, not Lewis.
None of that is a comment on Lewis as much as it is a comment on the public's ability to see people as actors and not as the character they play. Once an image is set the public is often reluctant to see them in another way and the movie business does not want to risk money on a project where they do a different type of role.

I'm floored he lived to be 91! From various news accounts he had prostate cancer, several heart attacks, pulmonary edema, type 1 diabetes, and he smoked 4 packs a day for decades. That's one strong son of a bitch.
