there are indeed multiple reasons for viewing/not viewing, but in this particular case, other variables can be controlled for and on the whole, viewership and attendance is down owe-able to kneeling during the national anthem.

that said, my slow internet connection is sometimes so bad it has caused me to give up on actually reading it, but I found an article whose headline was "four liberal concepts that are ruining football."

was able to get in:

quote:

With Roger Goodell as commissioner, concepts emulating those of liberal politics have crept into the sport, and have contributed to some significant negatives over the last few years.

Here are four liberal concepts that are making NFL football less entertaining.

#1 – Parity

Or as Bill Maher once called it – socialism. Maher proclaimed that the Democrat concept of socialism is what has led to the sport’s popularity. He claimed that “sharing the wealth” via salary caps and shared revenue made for a better league.

What Maher fails to address is that the shared wealth model has eliminated dynasties in the NFL – something that generates interest in the product based on both fans and haters of those teams – and has led to a much more watered-down product.

Last year’s Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks were thought to have a shot at becoming a dynasty based on their team’s young age. Instead, they are toiling through a difficult 6-4 start. Should they fail to earn a Super Bowl win this year, it would mark the tenth straight year without a repeat champion. The New England Patriots will have been the last back-to-back champions in 2003 and 2004, and the 10-year gap is the longest stretch without a repeat champion in nearly a half-century of Super Bowls.

Dynasties in football, are dead.

The NFL’s parity platform has also led to some extreme examples of ‘anybody can win on any given Sunday.’ It is a concept that sounds good on paper, but has led to infuriating unpredictability on the field. Earlier this season for example, the Pittsburgh Steelers took on a 1-win hapless Jets team following two straight games in which quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tossed a record 6 touchdowns in back-to-back games.

The Jets won handily, leading 20-3 by the time the fourth quarter started.

The Steelers also lost to a dreadful Tampa Bay team earlier in the season, while beating sound football teams in Indianapolis and Baltimore.

Simply put, parity – or socialism – is hurting the NFL.

#2 – Eliminating Exceptionalism

President Obama once famously proclaimed that he believes in American exceptionalism, just as “Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.” That is to say, he doesn’t believe in American exceptionalism at all.

So too, the NFL does not believe in individual exceptionalism. The league has been referred to as the No Fun League for several years, annually banning end zone celebrations that would dare to shine a light on the individual scoring, while possibly hurting the feelings of the opposing team.

Eliminating individual personalities and leveling everybody’s actions on the field is a distinctly liberal philosophy. Nobody should be allowed to rise above others. Wealth, whether it be monetary or statistically, is a source of shame, not to be celebrated.

#3 – War On Men

Rush Limbaugh calls it the “chickification of the NFL.”

Last year, Miami Dolphins player Jonathan Martin quit the team after accusing fellow teammate Richie Incognito of bullying him. In another incident, an offensive lineman for the Eagles accused quarterback Donovan McNabb of bullying him.

Limbaugh responded:

Good Lord, folks, what in the world is happening to this game? Players, hulks, 300-pound men running around crying, “He bullied me! He bullied me and he was spreading rumors about my sexuality.”

It’s just unbelievable. Let me ask you this: Is there somebody, anybody who’s played in the NFL, who’s not a bully, who’s not the victim of a bully, who isn’t gay, who hadn’t been accused of being gay, who’s not had a concussion, who has not had brain dementia, who has not had a hearing deficit, who has not been maimed? Would you please raise your hand? Is there anybody left in the NFL?

#4 – Over-regulation of defenders

The NFL has been eliminating what defenders can do in the act of tackling seemingly on a daily basis. The strike zone so to speak, for a defender to actually make a tackle has become so confusing and so minimized that it has led to an adverse uptick in offense and an unfair detriment on the other side of the ball.

And they have done this through red tape – rules and regulations.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock says of the litany of rule changes for tackling in the NFL that “you can’t legislate all contact.”

Those changes, from having to completely stop the fast and furious pursuit of a quarterback so he is relatively untouched, to having to tackle in a certain range on a moving target for other defenders, have become quite a problem. Quarterbacks and Wide Receivers have reaped the rewards of the NFL’s regulations, but at the expense of an inherently unfair advantage to the Defense.

Mayock added, “at some point football has got to be football.”

So what do you think? Is NFL football becoming more liberal in nature?

quote:

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has given his players an ultimatum regarding the national anthem. If a player chooses to disrespect the flag, he will not play in the game—and it’s as simple as that.

"If there's anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play," he said following the team’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, 35-31. "Understand? We will not ... if we are disrespecting the flag, then we will not play. Period."

Jones’s comments came after being asked about Vice President Mike Pence, who left the Indianapolis Colts-San Francisco 49ers game on Sunday when more than 20 players from the 49ers knelt during the national anthem.

"I know this, we cannot ... in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag," he said. "We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. So we're clear."

Two weeks ago Jones knelt arm in arm with his players before the national anthem at a game against the Arizona Cardinals. But he said respect for the flag is more important than any issues regarding team unity.

"We as a team are very much on the page together," Jones said. "We made our expression. I'm very supportive of the team, but under no circumstances will the Dallas Cowboys -- I don't care what happens -- under no circumstances will we as an organization, coaches, players, not support and stand and recognize and honor the flag. Period."

He continued: "There is no room here if it comes between looking non-supportive of our players and of each other or creating the impression that you're disrespecting the flag, we will be non-supportive of each other."

"We will not disrespect the flag," he said.

It probably has nothing to do with Trump, but the Cowboys fans themselves. Dallas is in Texas. Red State. Gave us Dubbya and Ted Cruz. They like the flag. And propane.

Yeah but before the owners were saying they supported the players, then Trump reportedly called them and now they are saying no.

Dallas Cowboys tickets cost about $110 each this season. You piss off the flag-loving locals that can afford to pay that, and you won't have a team for very long. When it comes to the bottom line, local politics matter in these situations a hell of a lot more than national politics, or personal politics of anyone involved.

Right or wrong, welcome to Capitalism.

Never mind. I was thinking that Jerry Jones said one thing before a Trump phone call, and changed his tune afterwards. But that wasn't the case.

A poll of 9,200 sports fans taken by J.D. Power showed that 27% cited protests as the reason for watching fewer games, and that that number was used in news reports. But that was misleading because that was only 27% of the 12% that reported watching fewer games. So it was only actually 3%.
Reported on SportsDay on Sept 23. Having trouble getting the link formatted from my phone, but it is easily found.

The NFL needs to drop Roger Goodell, and get somebody that has some damn sense to lead the league.

Hell I didn't even pay much attention to it until the protests came up. I pay more attention to college football. Alabama and all that.

But I tell you what, there are kids getting punished at schools for kneeling or not standing, and that is unconstitutional.

"ESPN Suspends Jemele Hill After Tweet Urging Boycott of NFL Advertisers"

ESPN has suspended Jemele Hill after she called for people to boycott the NFL's advertisers following a statement from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Jones said that if a player does not fully respect the flag, they will not play in the game.

Hill said that people who "feel strongly" about Jones' statement should boycott the companies that advertise with the team. She retweeted a list of advertisers in her quote tweet…

Yes. When it's a school sports event, then that would be absolutely Unconstitutional. Even college.
