[Awaiting Approval]

My guess is that it's the same person simply with multiple sock accounts. Can nothing be done about this? Seriously?

Greta75 -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 3:34:40 AM)

I think alot of things can be done, just that, they lack manpower and maybe funds.

bounty44 -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 3:42:10 AM)

I have no programming skills so I cannot say for sure but it seems to only be a matter of re-writing the code as to how moderated individuals attempts at posts are handled. instead of the "awaiting approval", their posts can be made to simply not appear.

WhoreMods -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 7:23:10 AM)

FR:
For some reason, they've decided that putting people on approval and not approving their posts is less hassle than banning people.
As the whole situation has been caused by somebody weaseling out of doing their job properly to avoid confrontation, expecting said person or persons to actually work on changing something to improve the situation is probably a little over optimistic.
(And if we're honest, a cluster of new threads that steadily slip down the page over the course of the day aren't that big of a deal: the same methods could be used to -say- bump a page or two worth of the legacy threads from five years ago back up to the front page.)

Computers can be blocked.

But the issue basically is, no one in administration cares enough to bother.

Computers can also be rooted through a proxy site to avoid a block.
Dead right about the rest, though.

LadyPact -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 9:19:18 AM)

Does anybody have experience related to this site about anybody's computer or IP address actually being blocked? I'm not aware of any, so it's a sincere question. I know we've had threads about how to evade it if it should happen. (Heck, if I recall correctly, Ar**g was a participant on one of those threads years ago, and told people exactly how to do it.) Does anybody know if it's ever been done successfully?

JVoV -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 10:21:21 AM)

IP bans can be easily thwarted, sadly.

jlf1961 -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 10:36:59 AM)

while it is true, IP bans can be thwarted easily enough, if you have a laptop, go to a different location and connect via wifi, or change carriers, or go through any one of a dozen anonymizer websites or use the equivalent in software, which effectively hides your IP.

However, in response to bounty's statement.

Every time you purchase a new computer, or upgrade the operating system on an existing system, you do register the os with windows, MAC or Linux. That registration actually does more than get you tech support.

It creates a unique fingerprint for each computer (the exception is the systems using a corporate software license, then every one is the same) which can be blocked, if you do have the necessary coding skills and are willing to purchase the necessary server software from whatever company wrote the software for your servers, and that sir, is expensive.

Some of the big hosting sites provide that as part of the package, but leave the site owner to actually do anything about it.

And in the case of collarspace, the owner is not really motivated to do more than he has given the mods the power to do so.

That is not meaning to demean the owner, just that the site does not generate enough of a revenue flow to actually make it worth his while. Its not like this is the kink version of Eharmony.

YOU NEED TO REGISTER LINUX?
FUCKING HELL!
(Sorry, I'll calm down now. And sneer at the next extropian wannabe freak who insists that letting Ubuntu spy on their internet use and sniff through their computer as and when is less offensive than letting Micro$oft or Apple do so...)

Well, yeah, although in linux defense, it is more for bug tracking than anything else, unlike microsoft which uses the 'bug tracking' ability of windows to research, develop and perfect new and even more maddening bugs to subject the users to.

Which, according to a friend that gave into the dark side and went to work for Microsoft, is the attempts of the OS development team to come up with new ways to see if they can possibly bust the unnatural calm that so many inhabitants of a certain island nation in the north sea seem to have.

In other words, my dear Brit, every problem that a windows operating system ever had has been created just to piss off the Brits!

No, I am not being sarcastic, although my friend may have been joking, but given the logic of his argument, it seems valid. I think they will actually make a flawless operating system the day after there is a collective scream of frustration from the British isles that makes the explosion of Krakatoa seem like the popping of a champagne cork in comparison.

The fact my frustration with the windows operating system has led me to work on a fiendish plan to get every roll of toilet paper used in every Microsoft facility soaked in ghost pepper juice seems to not be a deterrent.

Your IP is generally not fixed. If you disconnect your modem for a few hours and then reconnect you will generally get a new IP address. How long it takes depends on the policies of your ISP. What is more, you likely share your IP with a number of other people as well, so an IP ban is not really an effective tool; it will not stop the banned person and will inconvenience other people.

Ubuntu, which is the currently hardest pushed flavour of Linux, does not just take your details for bug tracking and the like. They've had to at least pretend to back down over some of the snoopware they pit in the update from three or four years back, but they still have their own online "store" and have taken measures to stop you installing anything from anywhere else on your machine, just like Android/Google, Apple and M$. I find the silence form Linux fans about this hilarious after listening to all of their complaints about the big evil software wannabe monopolies doing this over the last decade or so.

On the other hand, the current version of Raspbian (a tarted up version of Debian for the ARM chipset with its own desktop rather than the current one in most distros) works pretty well*, but I think that was mostly developed domestically, so you could well be onto something with the Brit-baiting thing.

*(In fact, it works well enough that I'm seriously thinking of taking the overpriced and barely functional piece of shit I bought from Apple off my desk and replacing it with a Pi 3 and a cheap HDMI monitor. It'd have to work very hard indeed to annoy me any more than this thing does, which again would seem to bear out your thesis...)

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 6:16:52 PM)

while it may be easy to block an IP address it's mostly pointless because 99% of users do not have a static (unchanging) IP address. Even if you simply leave your computer on all the time it will release and renew typically once a day.....

as for the AWAITING APPROVAL that is simply a way of letting the offender know they've been modded and when it goes away their posts will be visible again....it also let's the rest of us know that there are mods working the site......

FR

This site once harbored many more intelligent people with wisdom to share. I use to enjoy visiting and participating. Not so much anymore, sadly.

You really have to guess?
LMAO
It is obvious WHO he is, he types the exact same crap, under 10,000 names.

"That person" has been doing this for months now, aren't you used to him by now?
If nothing else, he offers a glimpse of someone fairly educated and mentally ill.
Have you noticed the distinct personalities?

Think of him as a year round, "permanent" Halloween present- the nightmare that will not go away.

MrRodgers -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 8:01:34 PM)

Not much if anything.

To my knowledge and that's superficial at best, CS has nothing beyond the minimum to run the site.

No real full-time employees
Not nearly enough server capacity
No moderators but those that volunteer and part-time
No system's audit as to a myriad and ever- increasing amount of problems all of which have nothing to do with the forum.

I for one, find it amazing that CS still even online.

kdsub -> RE: Can nothing be done?!? (10/16/2017 8:21:37 PM)

Just wondering... why must anything be done? If someone bothers you ignore them... if threads are not of interest don't comment. If you don't engage trolls they will go elsewhere. If you pay attention to them it just feeds their ego.

Does this person really stop you from making your point? I have no problem discussing and debating issues with those that I feel are honest in their positions even if i disagree with them... If someone trolls me I just do not engage them... If they take up too much room or clog up the thread I just hit hide... What is the big deal?

Butch

I appreciate it is. And they are not charging us for it.
So when I don't pay, I have no expectations.

They didn't ban the guy who openly advocated killing liberals.
WD isn't so bad.
