there is no universal truth.

This might have been the best place to initiate this conversation.

Well there are universal truths such as math and certain of our laws of physics. However, science is never settled on almost all of the laws of the universe and has allowed how it was, that this patent clerk came along and told everybody...Newton was wrong.

That patent clerk Einstein...was correct. Newton's previous math was not the whole truth.

On the subject of what truth is, existence is a truth, gravity, magnetism i.e., certain physical and mathematical 'truths' are universal truths.

The rest is conversation.

I do wonder if some of the posters in this thread aren't trying to push Hassan i Sabbhah's agenda, rather than Einstein's*: they like the idea that if nothing is true, then everything is permitted. Certainly the bag of orange shite currently stinking up the presidency takes this line. Facts are unimportant, what he says is the truth, and woe betide anybody stupid enough to think somebody who disagrees with the best president ever has a clue what they're talking about.

As for Newton, while most of his work in the realm of abstract theoretical physics has been disproven and supplanted, the last time I checked it was Newtonian physics that were used to put men on the moon, and that every country with a space programme still uses to launch rockets and calculate orbits.

*(Which is hilarious coming from the hysterically islamaphobic. They probably don't have much time for the old man of the mountains' most famous cheerleader either, given that the guy was an out homo and reformed junkie.)

No.

Nothing is more annoying than people insisting that everything is subjective over and over and then agreeing to disagree.
This is how we get to the point where blatant lies are the equal of established facts, creationism is equal to evolution, climate change isn't real, etc.

I think we can all agree that in terms of our collective human experience, truths definitely exist.

"I think we can all agree that in terms of our collective human experience, truths definitely exist. "

Perhaps so, but that only shifts the goalposts. Instead of arguing about whether any truth can be universal, we end up arguing about whether proposed truth X is actually truth or something else.

The discussion is endless unless we agree in advance what criteria must be employed to distinguish 'truth' from 'non-truth, ie unless we apply mutually agreed (and therefore necessarily subjective) criteria we have no means of identifying 'truth' from 'non-truth'.

Isn't the statement 'Every truth is just subjective' itself asserted as an objective truth? Just asking.

Mutual agreement is impossible, which is why you get the fuckwits who are allergic to facts in here demanding that their selective (and often just plain incorrect) interpretation of events is just as valid as something that can actually be substantiated or proven. Without honesty, there is no truth, and that's what some of these asshats are striving for: they're following Putin's lead in trying to muddy the waters so thoroughly that facts become as devalued as the nonsensical drivel they spout themselves.

There is a difference, a vast difference, between the philosophical notions of universal 'truths' I have in mind and the kind of "alternative facts" that you are focusing on.

FWIW I mostly agree with your view as it applies in the political arena. I have no time for nor do I wish to excuse in any way, the kind of idiotic mindless discourse that passes for political rhetoric in your country with the advent of Trump and his legion of knuckle dragging followers. Their positing of "alternative facts", which are usually total fictions, as truth is an appalling perversion of any notion of truth.

Yes - in the same sense as "all generalisations are wrong including this one"

From where I sit, it might be thought of more productively as one of the many paradoxes inherent in the notion of 'universal truth'.

Of course there is, but do you honestly expect the mouthbreathing droolers who voted the tangerine bawbag to understand the notion of Platonic ideals? They're not interested in philosophy or abstract notions about objectivity, they just want to scream and shout that the bullshit thy choose to believe is just as true as any facts that the lying liberal media can produce, so there!
It'd be funny if it wasn't so fucking pathetic...

But don't you hold your truths just as dear? The very definition of truth..." that which is in accordance with fact and reality"... is a simple concept. Yet facts are no more definitive than truth and we often understand the same facts differently... and therefore will have different truths. In the end it is who can convince others that their version of facts is truth. We as humans really have no idea what universal truths are...and may never know... So we must be content with what we BELIEVE and call it truth.

Butch

I do sympathise with your exasperation. But unfortunately the abuse of the notion of truth by Trump and his troglodytes is not an adequate reason to rush to embrace the slippery questionable notion of 'universal truth'.

In politics, the battle for one truth over another is an eternal one. It is usually won by those who present the best description of 'reality', and persuade others to agree to a sensible course of action based on that analysis. Usually but not always. The dangers of demagoguery, so clearly amplified by Trump, are ever present. If one's point of view fails to be successful in the battle of ideas, then really it is preferable to examine why that is, why people are not responding to one's message and to develop more successful ways of communicating one's ideas.

I'm sorry, but I was raised catholic, so for me, a thing is either true or false*. The truth is not negotiable. I have no interest in the ideological thing of arguing which of two lies or deceptions is the more acceptable in the light of what the liars' supporters choose to believe. I don't want to come over all Ayn Rand, but the whole idea of defining "truth" as the most popular and acceptable lie on offer is abhorrent. The notion that there might be more than one truth is a contradiction in terms.

*(like the bulk of catholic dogma, obvs. )

I read somewhere - sorry, can't remember the fellah's name - your best bet is to recognise that a truth is 'subjective, all the way up, and objective, all the way down'. Keep the paradox of that in your head, with all its tension, and don't try to homogenise it away. I've found it pretty useful, anyway, when 'up against it' re some of the ultra-thorny dilemmas.

I'm not sure that's adequate, given what we're arguably up against these days. The 'deliberate policy of creating ignorance' by those with the power to do it, for instance:

In an era of the 24 hour news cycle, with each political philosophy having its own propaganda machine, i.e FOX News, MSNBC, and each having its own staff of spin doctors not to mention the spin doctors on every political staff, the simple fact of the matter is that these people can and will make shit look like a rose and get the people to believe it smells just as sweet.

It is therefore true that truth, in anything other than science, is nothing more than subjective.

Trump makes the claim that the Obama administration bugged Trump tower, and then uses the fact that the DoJ was investigating one of the staffers on his campaign staff to prove his point.

A video comes out during the election that portrays Trump as little better than a sexual predator, and he says he was 'playing for the camera,' and is elected.

Harvey Weinstein comes along, and everyone is wanting to hang him by his balls, liberals and conservatives alike, and while granted he was much worse, some of his actions were no different than Trump's.

In this day and age, the following is true:
“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”

Not really. Last time I checked, gaslighting is just as frowned upon in a bdsm relationship as it is in the vanilla world. More so, if anything.

Perhaps the public should file a class action suit against the media.

Why? On the showing from you and your clade in here, the public enjoys being lied to by a biased media, so long as it's being run by white supremacists or Australians.
