Recently, I experienced a life threatening situation that arose from an increase in my cholesterol medication. I developed Statin intolerance that resulted in rhabdomyolysis. A breakdown of my muscle cells that ended up clogging the tubules in my kidneys. I went to bed one night and almost didn't wake up. Part of the problem was I was packing and moving and thought the extreme exhaustion and back pain was from over exertion.

Has anyone on these boards had a complication from prescribed medication that ended up almost killing them?

My brother has almost died twice in the last two years from prescribed medications. Both were medications prescribed for sleep that caused kidney and liver damage.

No to your question, but I wanted to pass on an article about statin drugs I read some time ago. If I ever get diagnosed with high cholesterol, I’ll refuse any statins. I’m pretty skeptical about most drugs generally, except antibiotics and novacaine when needed :)

I’m glad you’re doing better.

Fascinating.

I started on lipitor some weeks ago.....woke up 10 times a night with cotton mouth and coughing...stopped taking that drug....no more issues.

SpiritedSub, thank you for sharing that article. I had resisted cholesterol meds for years and my doctor literally chastised me into taking them. Kay even quit taking her statins, after what happened.

And the statins are implicated in causing diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and dementia (not necessarily in that order). Personally I’d rather have high cholesterol.

Edit: and before you take daily aspirin for any reason, read this:

Doctors are so hell bent on prescribing us drugs that I don’t trust them anymore. I first started doing my own independent reading when years ago I stumbled on studies that showed women who take calcium supplements to ward off osteoporosis have greater risk of heart attack. My doctor sure didn’t mention that to me.

My husband died 14 years ago due to mismedication. He was started on a new heart med. It made his heart stronger than it had been for years. However, they should have discontinued one of his other meds. It caused complications for months. He had 6 blood transfusions although no one knew where he was losing blood. His knees swelled up and he could no longer walk or stand. He finally went to the ER where the doctor there discovered that his potassium was so high his heart stopped beating on it's own and only his defribrillator which had some pacemaking capabilities was keeping him alive. The ER doc also figured out the drug incompatibility. He was admitted to the naval hospital. Three days later, with a potassium level that was still too high, they sent him home. Since everything tasted like ammonia he refused to eat or drink and died the next day. The whole time I was saying there was something wrong with that new medication but his heart was working so well that no one looked into it.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

Illnesses caused by doctors’ treatment are so common there is a word just for it in our language: iatrogenic
