Tal kissou, If they are true to the philosophy, as stated by Norman in the books, then, yes, all Goreans should be naturalists, and more specifically, reactive naturalists. Quite technically, Gorean Philosophy is a philosophy based on the inheritance of gender specific traits as the result of evolution and natural selection. That is stated in the books in a number of places. That is modern naturalism in a nutshell. (I state, modern naturalism, because there are distinct differences in naturalistic thought before and after Darwin. Prior to Darwin, the naturalistic perspective, while still based in nature side of the nature vs. nurture debate, looked to "deity" as "creator" of nature, and after Darwin, naturalism looked to inheritance, based in biology, and resulting from natural selection and evolution. It is therefore quite important that the two not be confused.) Gorean philosophy also advocates a turning back, or a turning aside from the current societal course into a course that is more in line with the true nature of human beings as animals. That is reactivism in a nutshell. (The original Reactivists were a philosophical school that existed in France after the French Revolution. As a group they believed that a return to monarchy rule was prudent based upon the chaos that French society became after the Revolution. Since that time, all philosophies that advocate a turning back to a prior time, or a turning aside from a current societal course, are considered reactionary.) All that can really be said about those who claim the Gorean Society, and are not true to the naturistic viewpoint is that they are not completely in line with the philosophy, but logically, since our existence is based on highly philosophical and logical principles, one can argue that if they display "Gorean-like" behavior, but that behavior is not based upon the Gorean Philosophy, but on some other, probably even incompatible philosophical outlook, that they are not in fact Gorean, regardless of their claims, but are in fact pseudo-Gorean, and that is an important disctinction in my mind. There are no modern naturalists who continue to believe that creationism is true. That has become the realm of the Theist school of philosophical thought, and it is one that is actually highly incompatable with modern naturalism in most respects. PETA is a joke. Survival of the fittest dictates that those organisms that are best suited to their environment will prey upon those less suited for survival. Ethics, especially as a philosophical school, does not enter into it. PETA is based on a coloquial bastardization of the word, and does not in any way reflect a valid philsophical approach to ethics. Naturalists are into natural philosophy. That can include assisting environmental causes, but most of us fully in the naturalist camp understand that protecting little pieces of the environment in an effort at staving off mankind's extinction is not a valid response to the problems caused by mankinds impact on nature. Recycling is a joke, and really is more along the lines of conserving natural resources, namely oil, so that we can continue to exploit those resources for a longer period of time. It takes a lot less oil to smelt already mined and recycled copper, plastics, etc. than it does to produce new. It is also all about profit in a capitalist society, because in many cases, it takes a lot less money to get the raw materials back from recycling than it does to mine the raw materials in the first place, and that allows products to be sold for the same price, even a higher price sometimes, even though less investment is actually required to produce the goods from recycled components. It is all in the way it is marketed, and it equates to more profit in the hands o the manufacturers. Those very focii make it unnatural despite the claims of its advocacy. Nature is, and nature will be, and nature will eventually deal with us in much the same manner that we have delt with nature. A backlash is coming. Nature will endure, and will be here long after mankind, thinking highly of itself, has gone by the wayside, yet another species who chose to ultimately not be in concert with nature, and was then destroyed by nature as lacking in survivability. Unlike the carrier pidgeon, we will only have ourselves to blame. Be well,
