Those are all alkanes. This group of compounds, made up only of carbon and hydrogen, includes pentane,  hexane, heptane, octane, decane, and another "ane" I ain't remembering at the moment. The first syllable denotes the number of carbon atoms - pentane has 5 carbon atoms, hexane has 6, heptane would have 7, octane would have 8, etc; so methane must have... 1 carbon atom, I think, ethane 2, propane 3, and butane 4. I think. Maybe. So those must be the first 4 alkanes?

No, no, that was a great one! It's just that my ex had a Ph.D in chemistry, and she loved to talk shop. And about 6 or 7 years ago, I did an article on refineries, and spent an afternoon interviewing a chemical engineer. For some reason, I was fascinated by his explanation of alkanes (or paraffins) and how they are refined. What stuck out for me was that those 4 are the only ones light enough to be gaseous at room temperature, whichI suppose would have been another answer to the question.

OK, then. Let's take it in this direction....

GM
Citigroup
AIG
Honeywell

Damn! I really thought this one was going to be tougher than that! You got it; these companies are all formerly listed on the Dow, but were removed over the last couple of years because they were no long considered accurate indicators.

That's correct, Aylee.  They are all prime numbers.
