quote:

2 "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything. 3 If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. 5 "But if the servant declares, 'I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,' 6 then his master must take him before the judges. [a] He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.

This quote from noyeh's wonderful post made her think.  Is this why John Norman chose to make the Goreans have such a view towards ear percing?  Did he choose to take this from the bible and add it into his books due to his own upbringing?  Did he happen to come across it at the time of writing and go.. "Ooooo what an idea.  I think I'll use that."    tressure wondered why the ear piercing was such a big deal to the Goreans, it doesn't seem like it would be as long as ears have been pierced in the history of life on Earth.

So, what are your thoughts?  Why did JN choose to add this to the books and make it such a significant event.  Girls, do you feel more slave like if you have your ears pierced?

Probably.  He does it all over the place.  There are so many things in the books that are thinly-veiled historical and mythological references that one sometimes gets the impression that he was toying with readers that he figured probably wouldn't have the education to recognize them.  Want an example?  Ever wonder where the name of the character Samos (slaver in Port Kar, close friend of Tarl, agent of the Priest Kings) came from?  Samos is an island in Greece.  It's where PythaGORas lived.  You know, the guy whose followers were called PythaGOREANS, who shaved their heads, wore white robes, and thought that there was a counter-earth on the other side of the sun.

So, what do you think?  Did Norman maybe borrow some ideas here and there?

As to ear piercing, he just used it to show that taboos are culture specific.  The character Elinor in Captive of Gor amazed her fellow newly-captured slaves when she didn't object at all to having her ears pierced (she was from earth where the practice, ad you know, is common).  Her sisters were also amazed when Elinor was horrified at having a nose-ring fitted (a practice not so common in New York, where she was from).  So, I doubt if many of your sisters are going to feel more slave like because of pierced ears.  Ask them how they would feel if their master announced one day that they were going to be taken to an auction house and sold to the highest bidder.  It's not so common a practice here, you see.

The best quote I have ever seen on the overall subject of where writters get their stuff was by another writer Laura Antonou when she said.

"Fiction writers use truth as a tool, the same way we use metaphors and archetypes. When it suits us, and the story, we add truth. When the truth is inconvenient, or ill suited to drama, we make up our own version of the truth."

Hi tressure,

I don't think I feel more slave like by having pierced ears, and wearing pretty earrings doesn't make much difference, but I do feel more like a slave when I'm wearing long earings that brush against the side of my neck. Feeling that tickle is something of a turn-on - always has been. :-) It is more significant to me now that I am a slave.

My ears were pierced when I was five so I thought it rather odd that John Norman made such a fuss about it in his books. I understand the symbology though - piercing the flesh. If I had been marked this way after becoming a slave I think it would probably make me feel more slave like. It's such a visible, every day reminder.

Kinda like the idea tha pants on a woman are not seen as scandalous anymore in the US either. The symbolism of having them pierced as long since been removed. The culture has changed and along with it the meaning behind the practice was lost.
Gor being a return to earlier times experiment the choice to return to some of the old meanings behind an act makes for good extra details to throw in when building an entire culture.

Greetings All,

this one had her ears done and 6 months and then several more sets through the years with a total of 4 in each ear.

the peircing that she thrust out of due to pain that Master will strap her in much tighter for, now that one makes her 'feel' slave.

she has no say,no control, it is entirely His wish.

She hates the needle(well in that particular area, anyway) but has no choice but to accept it
as
she doesnt want to get sent to the highest bidder

May she wish you well

greetings fyre,

the Owner had this big, ritualistic ear piercing ceremony that he performed on me (not sure how to word that) so I know I will always be kept as slave. I know that I will always have that marking, outwardly showing my true nature to all forever. He also at times refers to me as peirced ear girl.

well wishes

Greetings tressure,

I am glad you liked the quote. And I loved the quote in the bible about how the slave became the Masters slave forever in this manner in the bible. It really was beautiful and discribed what a beautiful bond a Master and his slave could build. To the point of the slave willingly giving up a chance for freedom till the end of his days.

Alas the piercing of ears has become  so common that the oddity of having your ear's pierce to be a slave for life is not so excitable now. I also have had my ear's pierced at a young age so its no big deal to me and no meaning behind it. But I would suggest maybe having more intimate area's pierced maybe. Trust me I have a most intimate spot pierced and it makes me feel very slavish all the time. (Cheeky grins.) But before you Master or Mistress goes piercing I would suggest they take a piercing class. (LOL)

When i grew up, having more htan one hole in the ear was a sign you were a punk. Only pircing alowed on a proper lady was one hole in eatch ear lobe. To day, when i had five more added, my mother hardly raised an eyebrow, and while it might be a bit out of the ordenary when i add a nose ring, a eyebrow ring and a pricing in my lip, it is not half as outragous as it once was. Chinise pepole however is mortified when they see Europeans whit pircins, it is simply not done becouse they fear distubing Energy meridians.

Muslim woman think of it as an outrage to show their hair in public, European women do not. Culture desides alot of what is an outrage and what is common.

Now in the Gor books it is written that it is beocue earth women often have their ears pirces it have become a symbol of slavery, becouse nearly all women from Earth on Gor are slaves, and there was no other tradition of free women wearing earings and so it is a thing only slaves have, and therefore a symbol. It is a cultural symbol nothing more. In India it is common for the the godparents or other near relatives to present a newborn baby girl whit a set of golden earings, real gold if they can aford it, this is belived to protect the baby from evil Spirits and her ears is pirces usualy only days after birth, I doubth the parents think slavery when they do that, they think aboute the protection for the baby, of is not superstitious think it is a nice family tradition. Now a Gorean woman and a Indian woman would therefore have completly different ideas of what earings meant. And seeing a girl whit golden hoops in her aear the Indian woman would think there go a woman the follow old family Traditions, her mother must be proud, while the Gorean woman thinks, there go a slave girl.

Greetings kiss,

That sounds kewl. This one just loves all the rituals that Masters come up with for their property

Master did a double peircing with this girl and her chain sister but this one thrusted a tad bit further than Master knew she couldso next time there will be more controls in place. actually He is thinking of a triangle instead of a hood now

wishing you well
