Masters, I wonder if i may ask a question i have been wondering aboute. This is not meant as any insult and is just a teoretical question.

If there was a fire in your home, God forbid, and you had to choose between saving a free guest or your own slave, witch one would you save?

i asked Master this question and he said that he would save me, i might be a slave but i am also his loved one, so he would save me before a Free guest, but i wanted to ask you to Masters and Mistresses, what would be your choice in such a situation.

As someone new to Gor, I would have to say that I would choose my slave, as the slave is my property and for whose life I am responsible. I am interested in seeing how the Goreans will answer this, and what my own answer would be again in, say, a year's time (although I suspect it would be the same).

Definatly my slave, she has more value to me than a free ever will, a free may be a friend, but they do not serve me, and I am not responsible for them, they make their own choices, they will choose if they save themselves or not.

Tal ya'll,

As a mother, my role in my house has been nurturer/caregiver since my children were born. Up till about the last year or two, I had children living with me. I considered their safety my duty. I considered my safety my husband's duty. It was taught to me like that. Now my sons are both grown to full height. My 16 year old is 6'1" and about 185. My 15 year old is 6'3" and about 185. They can literally take better care of themselves than I could of them at this point. I will never fully cease being their caregiver, but I know that as they mature this does change. In case of fire, or other life threatening situation, I would make sure my boys were saved ahead of me.

A guest in my home is offered my complete protection while there. My property upholds my honor. I will sacrifice my life to protect one that I have given guest rights to, and so shall my property.

Orion,

That's an interesting perspective and I feel very relevant to the discussion.  If the free were not your guest though, would that answer change?

For the sake of argument, let's say that there is another free (male or female, shouldn't be relevant), the two of you just met and are meeting at a restaurant with your slaves.  When you leave (going to another neutral ground location), muggers (2) with gun sappear.  Would you make sure that the other free was saved or your property?  To me this is a strange question (other than the fact that it's ludicrous, but we'll suspend disbelief for the sake of argument), having slightly different beliefs than Gor, a citizen (Free) is more important to the state than property.  It's a similar question to whether I would save my home or another citizen.  Yes, the home is very valuable to me, but the citizen is someone who provides value to the city/state.  In the RT Gor culture though, there are few city/states (or at least few who identify with them).

To all,

I think that it matters on the Free and it matters upon the slave for me.  If I don't like the free and think that they provide little value to the state, then I will let them die.  If they provide great value, but I don't like them... I may still save my slave, mattering on how valuable the slave is.  Yes, if they are a guest, they are under my protection and would save them before myself or my property, regardless of their value (or lack thereof) to the state.

I think that this may be the difference between a city/state and someone who is not assiciated with a city/state.  Without the city/state association, the slave would be the one that I save every time.  With that, things become much more complicated, as you have responsibilities to your city/state.  I currently have no city/state associations outside of the US, which is a relatively loose association.

Perhaps I see things differently, being female and not submissive. Seems to me that question is one of those "face the fire or dive into a rocky ocean" kind of questions either answer is unacceptable.  Without insult it seems to me that this question is less about the answer and more about "prove to me that I am your most important object of possesion".  It is impertient and out of place for a slave to ask a Gorean male to justify his reasonings behind the actions he chooses.  This is a qualified opinion of course because I do not know the context in which that question was asked but face value that is how it seems to me.

Afternoon Solinear,

In the later paragraphs you hit on something that reminded me of the old question of what 3 things would you drag out of the house if there was a fire.  Those 3 things are usually the most valuable to the individual. be it monetarily, sentimentally, or replaceability.

For me its not an either or, all life would be gotten out of the house before I did.  Guests, slaves, pets.  I don't think I could live with my conscience if I was outside watching the place burn and knowing there was somebody still inside.

So much for hypotheticals...

I wish you well,
Thadius

Greetings nephandi,

I would not care what the person was.  I would grab the first person that was closest to me and get them out.  No use in trying to save the slave if she is at the other end of the house while the Free was right next to you.

What about the fire safety plan for the residence, so many people have died in a fire, because the household did NOT have a safety plan.

Like I have said, get the first person out, then go for the next and so forth.

Be well.

Master, that is true, fire safety is to poor in many places. i think however i would have saved my Master over all else if i could, even if that meant letting somone i had a bigger chance in saving burn, it is just how i am wired, i care for me and my family first.

Greetings Master Thadius,

I survived a house fire, I got all the people out, the dog and two cats but could not get a caged bird out.

A fire rages out of control so quickly and the house becomes completely engulfed in smoke. I remember trying to get down the hallway only to be met by a wall of flames.

Master PO was a longtime volunteer firefighter, he has shared some of his experiences with me.

We have smoke detectors all over the house that have a backup system.

Master PO said he would save me , not because i have more value than a Free person but that i am his property.

well wishes
kisshou

Greetings

My first thought would be for my children before the adults.  Then again I am a mom.  My husband said his computer then winked and said life is valuable so he would do his best to get everyone out.

Since I view that all things have a value, it would depend upon the values assigned to those things. My code come first of course, so the slave would be saved in your situation because I have also told my property that I will protect them.

Tal Goreans,

Yes! As for specific situations under this heading; it would be fruitless to speculate as to the likelihood of the unknown.

Under this hypothetical, I would think both my slave and guest would have sense enough to get out of dodge. Now if a situation arose that say I had to make a choice, as in, I would have to save one or the other, and if I could only save one, ................

Probably my own property, because its mine, and I wouldnt want to lose it.
Yes a selfish act.

I considered that as well. I assumed this in my response but certainly takes a certain kind a person to go back into or just go into a burning building.

Can we get insurance on the slave?
