Well I'm not a mega company (we are a small little company lol) just personally never saw why everyone always charged so much for what costs so little. I'd agree about the setup fee, which is why it's not listed on my site - it's pointless and is just done to gouge folks that don't know better. I did notice though that you listed set up fees (okay so they are called sign up fees, but to me that's basically the same thing - what do you see as being the difference?), might want to yank them if you don't actually charge them, cuz folks might assume what I did, that the sign up fee is the same thing as a set up fee. And yeah your prices aren't bad, and would be considered competitive. Just when I see that I wonder briefly if I ought to charge more cuz they get so much - then I go nawwwwwww, cuz yanno I don't really need to pull in that much to cover costs which is all I'm really interested in as it would be nice for it to pay for itself - that's about all I'd want from hosting myself - just to cover the costs. Not sure why you'd feel offering a gig for 5 bucks would equate into being a money maker - Id assume it would be the complete opposite, lol. I suppose as an artist I see more reason why a lot of space is an asset - that and the fact I deal with so many musicians, their music takes up a large amount of space, they love the larger space, even if their site isn't a mega busy one, folks d/ling their music to listen to sucks up a lot of everything. Aspiring artists and musicians usually don't have a lot of money - we thought it would be nice to share the wealth and give them something really cool, and help support the arts. BDSM is just another extension of that - same reason why we host non profit sites - don't usually charge them (some insist) but their cause is worthy - so just seems like it's a good thing for someone to be in their corner. If money was my motivation, I don't think I could do as much good LOL! Besides, it's a TON more fun to give them something fabulously cool at a very low cost. That's pretty much standard security for most servers I've been around or dealt with - most are that anal. If they aren't - you don't want to do business with them lol. There is however a rather large difference from leasing space and leasing a dedicated commerical grade server, quite a big difference IMO. I kinda went went leasing a dedicated server because they were established and maintain their racks much better than our small business could do. I also like the fact that when servers go down, there's an immediate resoinse, like say when the fires ripped through the racks where my server was stored, and destroyed them all, we were up and going again on new servers in hours - something I couldn't guarantee if I was running just a couple of racks and something took them all out. Though when I go into places like the heavy duty rack storage units (retinal scans and thumbs scans are FREAKING cool, feels like Star Trek LOL!), I just get all dreamy lolol. I'm SUCH a geek. Ah well. I'd much rather make a ton of money from my art or our photography. lol Hosting just assures that I don't have to worry about someone yanking my sites for their prejudices about the BDSM lifestyle, and maybe share the wealth a bit and be able to help others get a great deal without paying an arm and leg when it's not needed, I just hate the gouging that I see everywhere. Plus I get to indulge in my serious addiction for making websites LOL! Its interesting that you feel that little sites don't need a lot of room but feel they need so many email accounts - egads! Granted I tend to just give them more email accounts if they ask - no sweat off my back, but needing 75 email accounts seems like overkill a bit for a small site hehe. Just out of professional curiousity why so many? Seems that it would open itself up for spamming abuse - something most hosts would wish to avoid since that new spamming law with the huge fine attached popped into existence recently. LOL that thing had all the lawyers at my work (I work for a rather large dot com company) all up in a frenzy. Hmmmmmm perhaps this is a conversation best held in private now that I think about it, since talking shop isn't always a great thing for a public space LOL. Always interested in talking shop - but prolly shouldn't be on the boards, lol - would enjoy continuing this in a more appropriate space though - that is, if you are interested anyway. Good luck with the hosting! And yeah that's rather a direct screenname, LOL. Still for humiliation factor I'd assume it does what it's intended to do. *chortle* ~ShadeDiva
