quote:

President Barack Obama has cast doubt on his promise to put an end to secret government by allowing his Justice Department to follow a path frequently taken by his predecessor. Before a federal appeals court in San Francisco Monday, lawyers from the Obama Department of Justice invoked the same "state secrets privilege" used by the administration of ex-President George W. Bush to argue that a lawsuit brought on behalf of Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyan Mohammad and four other alleged victims of the CIA's "extraordinary rendition" program should not go forward because revealing the evidence would harm national security.

quote:

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) attorney Ben Wizner, who argued Monday on behalf of Mohammad and the other appellants, told IPS: "To date, not a single alleged torture victim has had his day in court. In this case, most of the evidence is already public. There are no 'state secrets' here."

"And if there were, our federal courts are well prepared to handle this issue," he added.

"This is a betrayal of the rule of law," the attorney said. "It is not the standard we expected from the Obama administration."

This in my view would be the biggest mark against Obama thus far.

I saw this, it was on the daily tv news last week sometime. All I thought was threaten this, then that surely means they have something to hide, and what a way to treat a 'trusted' ally.

The question is, what will Britain do ?

Edited to add, Obama despite what hope he promised pre presidency, might very well be something very different now he has the seat of power, not to say he may change now he is in power, but he might be subject to forces within his own administration, perhaps things that were allowed to get out of hand during the last administration. He may be powerless to say anything other than what he has said, as he does have to put his country first. Let's just hope he is not protecting people that should be exposed, that, is all I can say.

Britain will do nothing.

It doesn't really matter who is in charge in Britain, they will always try to placate and please the American president.

It's a real crime, that the full truth of Gitmo may never come out to the public.

To assume they're in there for a good reason is a dangerous assumption to make when these guys aren't getting trials.

Unbelievable. We have no idea on what basis many are there. We are a nation of laws and when we stop...we are done with democracy such as it is.

Many there were arrested by bounty hunters and turned over to us for a buck. You'd think a whole lot differently if they came by and got you.

Still can't believe how quickly Americans took up the police state mantel when it comes to people rounded up by our govt.

Hmm maybe. I can't say i knew that though. Really though even when you have a trial and get found guilty it doesn't mean you are guilty does it? It means you've been found guilty by a group of your peers.
They are in there for a reason and i would hope and put my faith in that its a good one. Therefore my original statement still stands. As harsh as that may seem to some.

What a wonderfully informed and intellectual response!

While I doubt you really consider this an important issue in your life, considering how dismissive of it you are, if you are really interested do some research.

In both Afghanistan and Iraq the U.S. offered cash money for information on "enemy combatants".  Especially in Afghanistan, a country ruled by rival tribes and factions, turning over a personal enemy to the U.S. and claiming he was an insurgent was both a lucrative and easy way to rid yourself of that person.  There was no system of investigation or verification in place.  If you were targeted as an insurgent you were guilty until proven innocent.

Do you realize that the U.S. has been quietly releasing many of these detainees for the past couple of years, from prisons in Iraq as well as Guantanamo with no charges ever being filed, and no reasons given for their years of imprisonment.

But hey, they must have been in there for good reason, because no government would ever incarcerate innocent people, right?

In my view, it shows that Obama is learning that it is entirely differnt being on the outside as a "critic" and being the guy on the job with the responsibility to protect the homeland.  You might prepare yourself to see Barack carrying on more of George Bush methedology.
