Lengthy article, and extremely educational. It has very little to do with Obama, but it makes a great case in favor of the death penalty, as well as for prosecuting terrorists through military tribunals (as opposed to civilian courts), and this guy is yet one more poster child for any argument in favor of keeping Gitmo open.

quote:

NEW YORK – In 1973, a young terrorist named Khalid Duhham Al-Jawary entered the United States and quickly began plotting an audacious attack in New York City. He built three powerful bombs — bombs powerful enough to kill, maim and destroy — and put them in rental cars scattered around town, near Israeli targets.

The plot failed. The explosive devices did not detonate, and Al-Jawary fled the country, escaping prosecution for nearly two decades — until he was convicted of terrorism charges in Brooklyn and sentenced to 30 years in federal penitentiary. But his time is up.

In less than a month, the 63-year-old Al-Jawary is expected to be released. He will likely be deported; where to is anybody's guess. The shadowy figure had so many aliases it's almost impossible to know which country is his true homeland.

I was just reading this article, Sanity.  I'm guessing you don't think he is rehabilitated?

...ok, i can see how this case argues for a death penalty. i don't see the connection to military tribunals or Gitmo though. Can you explain?

There is no argument for keeping Gitmo open... Even with assholes like this one, once he has served his time he is set free and in this case deported.
We set free murderers, rapists petty thieves and even terrorists if the sentence is up!...It is the rule of law...I truly don't disagree with much else you have to say in this case Sanity, but no more Gitmo!...

If the CIA doesn't do it's job in his case (which I sincerely doubt they will, under the current administration) Khalid Duhham Al-Jawary is undoubtedly going to be involved in the murder of countless innocent men, women and children all around the globe.

What exactly is the difference between a prison in Cuba and say a supermax prison like the one we have in Colorado?  Okay, I understand the no torture thing.  But what difference does it make where the detention facility is?

Well SBFY

I think the big one is they will be forced to follow the rule of law.  Something many many people have forgotten about these last 8 years.

I agree, our prisons hold the worst of the worst here and it seems to be doing a fine job.   Don't see why that can't hold any of the convicted terrorist's (oh wait, they would have to be convicted)  I understand now.

I think they should move them all to prisons in the states and let them stand trail and be judged

I haven't a better answer than, it isn't the locale but what it has grown to represent.

Housesub, I agree that many of them should stand trial.  However, some of them are simply being detained as enemy combatants.  It's not the first time in history we've done that.  When you choose to wage war against the United States outside the authority of another government's military services, you're an enemy combatant.  It's not the same thing as a a P.O.W. or a common criminal.

Cool.  The Geneva Conventions say we should either shoot them, or hang them.

It's always funny how you claim the AP is one of the most liberal biased news organizations and dismiss anything they say when it doesn't agree with your viewpoint.  Yet you have no qualms about citing it as an authoritative source when it does.

I'm pretty sure you're making things up. I really don't think I've described the Associated Press as one of the most liberal, and I know I've never dismissed all of their reporting outright, even if I am aware of their left-leaning political orientation.

CBS, NPR, MSNBC, Reuters, and CNN are the most liberal... but I seriously doubt that you'd accept any hard news in any posts which run counter to your belief system - regardless of their source.
