*snicker* well, little bundles of black hanging off, but am thinking you don't want to be making any jams or desserts with them! what kind of tree is it?

No, no...can't say i want to make any jams or deserts with *those* little black bundles...

It's a black cherry hybrid...not sure of the actual latin name for it :(  The little black berries are like miniature black cherries...without the pits....birds adore that tree *sigh*....we have a TON of bats...maybe they'll eat the little tree killers? *here's hoping*

Heathenry: absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Dead trees: yup. Looks it to me... but check your trunk area - if the ground is very firm, it's still alive down there. If it gives easily under a weight - say, Insty standing on one foot - then it's pretty much well and truly firewood for next winter.

Entourages of Mayans v. Filthy Assistants: I used to have a crew that would come with me when I was working up in MN. I didn't ask for them to, they just tagged along. I felt guilty when I had to tell one or another to not come back because the owners needed me to cut labor. But at least they new that it was business and not personal and that I was on the line with someone setting up an interview for them before they came in to get the axe. Filthy Assistants, on the other hand, are mercenaries - loyalty is earned by demonstration or signing paychecks. I prefer the FAs these days. Some of them even get the Spider Jerusalem reference...

Sunday Morning: moving slowly. Which is good.

Busted Coffeemaker: if it's one of those cheap drip makers, drain it all and flip it over. open up the bottom and look to the switch. 90% of the time, the switch is busted... so dike it out (unplugged!) and connect your wires wit a nut. Power on and off with the plug. Hie thee hence to Radio Shack for a replacement switch. Or just go to Big Lots - I bought my wee Krups beast there for all of $9US...

Biscuits: K, as in actual biscuits per US parlance - or do you mean what us heathen yanks call "cookies"?

Possessiveness: simply because I'm choosing to get a brass padlock engraved with "Property of Donna *******/If found, please call (***) ***-**** or drop in any mailbox" doesn't mean anything, really. Hell, we haven't even met in person yet... 10 days.

Ghita's & BSB's absences: <sigh>

Beating: I mostly want one because a good flogging will pop my back for me. Actually, I'd want to give as well as receive... I'm so switchy that way. Have some nice oiled rattan canes just collecting dust in my closet... <sigh>

Fresh Meat: yup, like a pub - with a "Boobs or GTFO" cover policy... which is entirely optional. They don't even need to be yours...

Carianna: so post the pics already, dammit!

That's all I got. Fold...

e01n, i'm just trying to fathom why/when/how you're little brass lock would come off and make it necessary to be posted back to donna....

Hrmmm.. e01n and Donna posting at the same time.. hrmmm.. is there a conspiracy afoot?

D - LOVE the new 'do..

e01n - B's "fancy" machine bit the dust.. well, kind of.. it kept coming on at random intervals.. then stopped working.. needless to say, that put us into a panic as Reny's wasn't open that hour of the morning.. then I remembered I'd brought My old Mr. Coffee with Me when I moved in.. needless to say, good ol' Mr. Coffee's been going strong for a year (knock on wood), and has officially outlasted two wives (D-day was friday.. I think) and half a dozen "serious" g/f's.. :-)

G'morning bear... have I mentioned lately that I absolutely LOVE chewing on scrotums..?

Lock: as a joke... as if it'd come off lil' e01n, even for sex. It's all about the girth and heft!

Biscuits: if that's so, just make your own. Flour, fat, a bit of baking powder, milk - that's all you really need...

shit, I guess it's time for a recipe...

Buttermilk Biscuits:
2 cups flour, sifted
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup plus 2 teaspoons buttermilk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients and blend thoroughly. Using your fingers or a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk and quickly blend in, making sure to not overwork the dough.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough with a rolling pin to a thickness of 1/2-inch. Use a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass, press out as many biscuits as possible. Gather up scraps and quickly knead back together, then cut out as many additional biscuits as possible. Place biscuits on prepared baking sheet and bake until golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes. Serve immediately.

So how to serve immediately... This is my way:

Country Ham with Redeye Gravy and Buttermilk Biscuits
6 (1/2-pound) country ham steaks (uncooked)
2 tablespoons butter
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup very strong coffee
3/4 cup chicken stock
1/4 cup chopped green onions
1/4 cup heavy cream
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Buttermilk Biscuits, recipe follows

Heat a large skillet over high heat and saute ham steaks 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Remove to a plate and keep warm while you make the sauce. Add butter and onions to skillet and cook until onions are softened, scraping up any browned bits on pan bottom. Add flour and stir well to combine. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, then add coffee and chicken stock. Whisk well to combine, then allow sauce to cook until thickened, about 6 minutes. Add green onions and heavy cream and cook 5 minutes longer. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, and serve over ham steaks with buttermilk biscuits.

This is supposed to be for 6 people. Too bad there's only 2 in the house... <sigh> We need house guests at Casa e01n.

Coffee: By the brew of the bean, I set my mind in motion...

Pirate Princess Donna: good morning...

Sappa...here's a picture of the tree...Dad came for a visit yesterday and said we'd be lucky if it weren't already dead...dunno if you can see it in the picture, but the tents extend over the trunks now (and have somehow made it down to the birdhouse) *sigh*...god damned squiggly fuckers.....

Hey Insty and b... I did some cursory research for your Black Cherry tree (the article about the tree is the second one on the page, after the article about the music album Black Cherry).

From the looks of it in the pic, it doesn't look good. If you think there should be leaves on it at this time of year and there aren't, it doesn't bode well. B, since you love the tree and have a strong interest in keeping it, you may want to have your local Cooperative Extension agent come out and take a look, or pay to have an arborist make a health assessment.

One of the points the article made about these trees, and I can vouch because we had a couple in upstate NY, is they're weak limbed to begin with and they don't have long lifespans. If this tree is dying or dead, and it's anywhere near your house, a heavy snowfall or ice storm may bring parts of it, if not the entire thing, down this coming winter... possibly damaging your home. Something to consider.

Since these are native trees to your area, you may be able to find a healthy one growing in nearby forests or fields and transplant (of course, with the landowner's permission ).

I'm sorry about your tree...
