Ohh  carols in the domain, forgot about that.
Might put my feet up and watch whats left of it.

Reminds me, a friend invited my um and I to the local carols by candlelight, and my heathen child complained about it... 'I thought we were singing christmas carols, why are all the songs about jesus'  ... and 'mum, are ALL these people christians?'

rofl, that's too funny. you been neglecting a well-rounded education?

we're new to adelaide, and i dragged the kidlet to a local church - turned out to be baptist - that was having a carols on the grounds. was kinda nice. the kidlet's not into christmas, but she loves singing. problem is, after several days of 30+ temps, the weather turned vy vy cold and we sat and shivered in the shades. sigh. had to go home early just to warm up.

i REALLY miss having my own place, and my own tree and my own carols blaring from the speakers!

I have to wonder about Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere, so much of the symbolism beneath the Christian overlay would seem so out of place on long, warm days.  Do you Aussies have a good celebration of something in late June?

late june... no, not really. though christmas in july happens.

without getting into a philosophical debate about the pagan holidays vs the christian overlaid holidays, truly, it's about the reasoning for the season.

australians do tend to still have the whole traditional roast beef/lamb/whatever joint of meat they like, and roast potatoes, etc. pure madness for the heat, lol, but people love their traditions.

it's also traditional these days to indulge in bbq's with lamb, steak, seafood, etc. and salads and cold desserts like trifles or pavlovas, etc. and going to the beach and getting a sunburn, and watching out for sharks and bluebottles (jellyfish) could also be said to be traditional!

All the seasonal holidays being in reverse though...  The death festival of Halloween in the spring, the fertility celebrations of Easter as the leaves are falling and temperatures dropping...

      Oh well.

lol, yup.
and the greater portion of the population from norther hemispheres too.... australians, by their nature, tend to be a laid back population. they take the reversal of seasons and meanings in stride, and either ignore the paradox or embrace it.

truly, there are some years i really miss the snow at christmas. mind you, t he weather being so odd, i just have to hop down to tasmania and catch a bit of snowfall they're prediting on xmas day this year!

you should watch ours on tv if you can! they are truly spectacular, and almost the first to go off in the world (new zealand beats us by  a few hours). they set them up on the harbour bridge and in 3 spots down the nepean river. lot of people watch them from the foreshores and the opera house, then go down to the beaches for a good old booze up - especially UK tourists, lol!!

http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/nye/

btw, the coat hanger on the bridge is a reference to what the harbour bridge is freuqently nicknamed! australians tend to be somewhat irreverent.

Thrilling as the prospect of hanging out here is, I really have to get busy prepping the house for Christmas morning.
