ORIGINAL: impishlilhellcat I hate it when I don't know and can't really find anything on whether or not a collection agency can charge interest on a collection bill from a hospital.. Anyone know? Generally, interest can be charged on any unpaid bill. If you still have the copy of the financial policy you signed at the hospital, the very fine print will give you the details. You can, however, negotiate with the collection agency. You're in a better position if you can make an offer in compromise... for instance, if you owe $500, offer to pay $300 lump sum to settle. If you need to make payments, it's not very likely they'll work with you. If you use a bonafide debt counseling agency, such as Consumer Credit Counseling, they have agreements with creditors and collection agencies to stop or greatly reduce the accumulation of interest.
