The Democrat's filibuster-proof super majority is now out of reach for them. I wonder though, will they honor the filibuster rule, or will they try to change it...

I think in the beginning and on some of the larger issues they will not have a problem bringing some from the GOP on board. They will never get the conservative support from the south, but up north I think many in the GOP realize they have to be in the middle if they want to stay in office. They can read the writing on the wall from the last two elections

Not my fault! I voted for Martin!....
Chambliss is a political hack in the reddest of all red states and it happens to be the one I live in!....
A Bush Chaney Republican with his head so far up the sugar and farm lobby's ass he doesn't know where
their asses end and his head begins....But hey, that is just my opinion and down here I am in the minority.

I cannot believe the state I grew up in could have elected Chambliss again. Since the state's residents no longer honor the service of veterans the state's military bases should be closed and the money spent elsewhere.

I think it has to do with the impossibility of a filibuster proof congress at the time but thats just a guess.

I also don't know a whole lot about Chambliss. What has he done that draws such anger? This is just curiosity, not anything else.

Overblown.

The Democratic majority is not as shatterproof as advertised. Dems tend to be less cohesive than Republicans anyway.

The real news is due to what Chambliss is. He's an unapologetic adherent to the Bush-Cheney school that just got thumped nationally. Interesting to see if he continues to stick to his guns or becomes more moderate.

It's delusional to believe that the Democrats needed filibuster to achieve their goals. Sanity needs to catch on with the fact that the Democrats and Obama, our new Lord and Master (

) have made clear that partisanship isn't part of their agenda: there's a crisis to deal with out there. I betcha (

) that many Republicans will have the intelligence to cross over party lines. Gone are the days of petty politics at all cost.

In his 2002 campaign for the Senate he attacked the patriotism and loyalty of Max Cleland, the incumbent sentor who is Vietnam vet who left 2 legs and an arm over there. While Cleland was almost dying for our nation Chambliss was seeking deferments.

It was the most repugnant election campaign tactic of my lifetime. Chambliss is the proof that the right wingers don't really support veterans or this country except when it is convenient for them.

Probably a good thing, no legislation should go unopposed. Then again there is the balance of not having an ineffectual legislative to be struck.

I just love that word filibuster, how peculiar.

Pelosi is not alone CL....unfortunately petty politics runs on both sides of the aisle....more so in the house of reps than anywhere else. They only have to appeal to their district, not to a whole state nor to the nation. As things go, I am beginning to believe that perhaps a unicameral legislative body might be best.
If she admonishes Obama I think she'll find herself out of the loop no matter her position...I do believe he doesn't want to dirty the water but, I don't think he is naive enough not to do so if he has to.

The Dems spanked Clinton over HillaryCare and pretty much forced him to cozy up to the Republicans.

When it comes to passing legislation and getting Congress to actually DO something, the Speaker of the House is more powerful than the President, having not only a bully pulpit but actual hands on the controls, so to speak.

In some terms, I agree the speaker is a powerful position but, she has no mandate and he is stronger within the party. She is also a smart politician, if she over reaches( I truly hope not, but have my fears) she'll learn just how effective Obama can be. I think due to his demeanor people under estimate his strength.

She has the same pseudo-mandate he has--if not moreso. Remember, his margin of victory was far from compelling and even farther from historic. The Democratic gains are, in the final analysis, on her turf.

The Speaker runs the House of Representatives--and that is where the principal power for domestic policy lies in our government. The President influences only by persuading Congress to go along. If Congress says "no", he has little recourse but to bow to their collective will.

She is one of the least popular people in America....He is one of the most popular....the fact will not be lost on Obama. I think he is capable of playing "the game" and might be able to play just dirty enough to get what he wants. Not a fact just a belief....
