Rain, as much as ya love furbabies... raccoons as pets is a bad, baaad, BAAAAAADDDDD idea.   Feral furballs are not meant to be domesticated.

On a side note....

yay punky!

yay for rain for adopting kourageous kitty kat!

Peaches, I can't tell you how shocked I was to see them there, 2 feet in front of me, poking and scratching at the screen. There were 3 of them, and at first I thought they were possums. But then I grabbed my glasses and saw the little hands and the little masks and realized what they were. You could have knocked me over with a feather! And there's Punky going "I told you to stay the FUCK out of my house - now go away!!!1! This is MY house, not yours!!!!! Don't make me come out there and teach you a lesson, fuzzball! Now GO AWAY!!!!  I'll pop you one, I swear to God, I'm going to pop you one or two, ALL of you!"

Then without a trace of fear of me, they just kinda sighed and wandered off..... wonder if i could make one a pet? Think I'll start setting food out for them.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!  Don't do it!  They grow up to be quite mean.  When we lived in San Francisco, they were everywhere & since we left the door open for air & cats to move freely in & out, they would come inside.  One day my girlfriend called & said she couldn't leave the house because one of them was on the roof of the porch & threatening to jump on her head every time she stuck it beyond the roof line.  It was growling & carrying on.

My sis-in-law decided to start feeding one at her place because it was sooooo cute.  It grew up & was threatening her cats.   They do look cute, but they're wild animals with claws & teeth & they're not afraid to use them.  They are very aggressive.  Do your best to discourage their coming around your place!!!!!

Raccoons get and transmit rabies easier than any other wild animal I know of. The prevalance of the disease in raccoons is very high.

You really want to subject Mr Smartie, Lumus and yourself to a series of shots in the stomach? Don't do it.

*I Agree With This Post*
My Husband and I are wildlife damage control and rehab agents for the states of North and South Carolina, so while I don't know everything there is to know, I feel that I am fully qualified to not only agree with the two previous posts but to encourage you to NOT try to capture and make pets of them, as well as to please stop setting food out. Yes, they're very cute, and fun to watch, but that's where it needs to stop, for the animals' sake as well as yours. More so than any other species on Earth, even rats or cats or dogs or foxes, racoons are the single largest rabies vector. Moreover, offering food isn't really doing them any favors; the little bandits are in fact very adept at finding their own vittles, and if you make them think that all humans are nice and will feed us, they lose the natural fear that should be keeping them off in the woods where they belong. Trust Me on this, ok?

Racoons?  NOT PETS!  Just saying.  Let them work for their food, it's what they do best.  Cool little buggers, though.

Okay, is Holls still on holiday?  WHERE?

THE WINDOWS ARE ALL INSTALLED!  THE STAINING IS DONE!  THE HOUSE ONLY STINKS A LITTLE!!  Now, for more cleanup action...

I know, I know.... I wasn't serious about it, I know that feral animals need to stay where they are and belong. These are city coons, because I live in the middle of a good-sized city. Lumus also mentioned the rabies and I know what the treatment entails. I gotta say though, they weren't that scared of me, I was only 2 feet away from them and they were like "ya, whatever, lady - now give us the food". Besides,I know the mischief and mayhem even just one would cause if it ever got in here. It was a good reminder for me to check our windows and make sure that they aren't open so they could get in.

Two days ago, We managed to trap not one, not two, but FOUR baby oppossums in a cage. We knew the mama was around and would have to reset another cage for her later, so We brought the thing full of babies on back to the house. We have several cats, who were incredulous at this, and there was much sniffing; My cats, however, have become mostly immune to such stimulus (read; they don't give a crap), because they see so much.
This morning, We caught the mama, and they have been reunited; at dusk this evening, the oppossum family will be released into the woods at the edge of a state park, and another job will be well done.

Oh they have, LH, they have. A lot of times at night, they'll be in the windows hissing and spitting at something we can't see and based on the pungent, aromatic stench we've smelled a few times, I know there are also skunks in the area. If you saw the earlier posts, I mentioned that Punky was all over the window, trying to shoo them away. Queenie is too busy ruling HER bed (that which used to be OUR bed but she graciously now allows us to sleep in a small portion of it - the rest is her's to reign over) and sleeping all snugged up. She is seriously tempting me to go take a nap with her! But I can't right now, it's almost lunch time and I have to make Mr. Smarties his lunch and watch him.

        Is it bed time yet?

Rain.....be careful with the Punkster and Queenie around the windows with the local wildlife......I lost one of my cats years ago to a male that got in thru a screen of an open window...ripped a hole right thru it...he had feline leukemia, and within 2 weeks, Alex was gone.  Rabies is carried by the fleas on the animals, I'm sure you know, but those little buggers can get thru screens, and I'd hate to think of EVERYONE getting those shots...however, they give them in the arm now, apparently.  Since your windows in the apt are on the ground floor, they have great access to the place.  Check and make sure the screens are secure....raccoons can open anything once they figure out how!

Besides......the resulting mayhem of someone getting in (or out) would curl your hair!  That cat fight in the living room of the house scared the living crap outta me!  Not to mention that the tom cat sprayed everything.....OMG...talk about a stench!

I'm a sucker for wildlife, but as mentioned, those little critters are more than fed enough.....they're getting their 3 squares in every dumpster out there.  And yeah, they are cute little buggers, ain't they?  I just love their little bandit faces!  Must be the country girl in us.....

Oh, and the whole bed thing....all I can recommend is a king size bed.....trust me, mine was well worth the expense......I can actually lay straight in mine!  The boys line up on the one side, and Squeaks either is under the covers, or she flops by the pillow up at the head of the bed.

When I had Mr. Cat, the 18+ pounder who wasn't at all fat, we worked out a deal on my queen sized bed:  He took one half & I got the other.  *snort*

You've seen this place, ain't no way a king size bed is fitting in here. As for the screens, they were just replaced and attached to the frame so they don't come out. Heck,  I can't figure out to get them out, if a raccoon can figure it out, I'd be shocked. But then - they are smart little buggers. As for rabies, the cats are up to date on the rabies shot, have no clue on Queenie's status with leukemia, Punky is good right now though. I'll have both of them tested again at their annual check-up and boosters. An expensive test but worth the peace of mind!

Rain - This is not a joke! My suggestion is that you all have several nice dinners of BBQ racoon (cooking guides can be found online) and have the furs made into something else or stuffed if you want something cute to look at. (if it is illegal to fire guns in your area then a very high powered air rifle should work.) If not pepper spray them, shoot them with rock salt, or call animal control, and get them the hell away from your kids, cats, and house.
They are cute but they are dangerous - your kid and cats will not stand a chance. So far no human deaths here (but several bites and the racoons where not rabid) but lots of dead cats and small dogs. They are mean and tough and they do not have to have rabies to attack. Forget rabies shots. Think about several fully grown racoons cornering your kid or cat. I would not risk it!
If they want to stay out in the woods fine. If they want to make house calls - they die.
Just my 2 cents - I'm off to go camping in the woods.

And if the coons do become a nuisance, usually a quick call to the MNR will solve the problem. Often the local Animal Control won't help deal with wildlife problems.
