As much as I hate to admit this... yes, the special tool did help. Looking at it I'd never have thought it would have survived busting through the corrosion. It's made of the same material that the Trex material is that is used for outdoor decking (old recycled milk cartons and other plastics). For being a plastic tool, it surprised the hell out of me.

Of course, if I had just driven the twenty or thirty miles to the closest real hardware store and picked up a six-inch long 5/8" socket, it would have done the same thing. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of things I'd go out of my way to do for the Elderlies, but driving 40 to 60 miles round trip for a socket I'll never use again ain't one of them.
