Status: offline 		  It was Apple Cinnamon Cheerios and OJ here.... .new diet for Mr. Smarties. Try explaining about no artificial colours or flavours allowed in the diet. Oh ya - that went over real well.

i am doing the groundwork for the Feingold diet (recommended by the doctor) for the LoudOne. Preservative and additive free, but not free of refined sugars. It is not easy, Rain...i feel your pain

The main culprit is red dye and damnit...it is in everything!! Do you know white cake frosting contains red dye? Therefore, it is not simply a matter of common sense (i would have thought the color of the food was an indication of the type of dye it contains....not true at all!!).

I now join you in the ranks of the Label Reading Brigade

Status: offline 		Label reading is depressing.  i am watching out for sugars and sodium.  Did you know that Thick and Chunky Salsa has high fructose corn syrup in it? btw no red dye in that one.
 
Cooking from scratch seems like the best way to go ... if you have time and talent.

Status: offline 		  Good - because dammit, it added 3 hours to my shopping this week and partly (just partly) pissed Lumus off. Wait til HE goes shopping and can't get this, can't get that, can't get just anything because of the damned additives!!!

Let's do our shopping together! We can have so much fun they'll kick us out of the store!

(Do you have a Whole Foods or health food store near you? Zehr's[the local major grocery store] up here has a health food section that I might start hitting up. For juices, I discovered that Minute Maid, while from concentrate, has NO artificial colours or flavourings. Plus, Nature Valley nut bars, which Mr. Smarties can LIVE on, where it says "colour" on the ingredient label, is a natural colouring from fruits and vegetables. I called them directly to find that one out. Most companies have been really supportive when I've called about ingredients.)

  Can you tell how much time I've already put into this?

Status: offline 		Holly, it will be slow going at first on the label reading, but after a while you will work out a list of things that will be ok.
 
The icing my mother made did not require cooking. 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine, 3 cups powdered sugar, 3 Tablespoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla.  You mash the butter and sugar together completely then add the milk and vanilla gradually.  If it gets too thin add a little more powdered sugar - too thick add a TINY bit more milk.  You can use a mixer or mix it by hand with a heavy spoon. 
 
A nice drizzly glaze for cinnamon rolls, coffee cake or angel food cake is just 1 cup powdered sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and 1 Tablespoon milk.  Just mix it all together with a spoon in a small bowl.  If it is not thin enough use additional milk 1 teaspoon at a time until it looks right.  (This does not use butter.)

She would probably love them, but I doubt that I am allowed chickens inside the city limits.  I hope someday to be able to visit Holly's place.  Butterhead LOVES LOVES LOVES cows, and I think that she would have a good time. 

Killing them. . . I doubt.  She is pretty sensitive about people or animals hurting.  But she DOES know the difference between "real" animals and the "fake/cartoon" animals. 

Now plucking them, I think that she could get into that.  LOL

We have a health food (natural foods) store here. . . I know that there is a relatively new company selling cookies and snack things that are free of a lot of things, I did not read over the lable that closely, but I will keep my eyes open and try and recall the name of the company. 

If both you and Holly want to let me know WHAT things you are looking for, I can check at the health food store and see if there are websites or what not where these things can be ordered. 

Also, keep in mind that many things can be made at home and then frozen.  That way you can just take out a couple at a time. 

I will be trying to make vegetable cookies for Butterhead soon this way.  Yes, I plan to manipulate my child into eating vegetables.  Deal with it. 

If I can come up with a good recipie though, I will be happy to send you each a copy.

Maybe i could become a grocery store consultant for special diets.  Tell me what is on the no no list and i will do the research (label reading) for you.  Also suggest easy home-made alternatives.
 
i have to do a project paper for my Nutrition class.  Maybe i could kill two birds with one stone.

I agree!  Please. :)  Our neighbours are having a bumper crop of zucchini this year.  The stuff is going mad, and we're due to inherit what looks to be about a ton of it... no literally, they've already harvested two huge boxes of it and that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Carrots and zucchini's were my first choice, and I wanted to try and subsitute honey or molassas for the sugar. 

Edited to add, I also know that you can substitute parsnips for apples in dessert recipies.
