With a donation i really think there is no finality for the family. Do you really want your grandkids to wonder if the skeleton in their science lab is good ol Grandma?

We have all loved and lost, and after the funeral there is a HUGE sigh of relief...it's over...he/she is in their final resting place, etc. The family of those who donate, no matter how noble the intent, are denied that relief.

All valid points (hate agreeing w/you) but as a nurse, you realize the value of the donation.  It can be done after the funeral as long as the funeral is right after the death so no embalming is necessary.

Status: offline 		Cadaver donation ...... we had a family member who did that a long time ago when their son died at an early age (young adult).  Something to think about is the effect it would have on your family.  Yes - you can have a funeral.  Obviously no burial.  I believe it was something like 10 years later that the family received the body back for burial.

There is a shortage of cadaveric donations, just as there is any organ donation.  The future of our medical systems and the ability of our future doctors depends on them having access to specimens.  It is one thing to see pictures in a textbook, and read all about it - but when the skin is pulled back and you actually SEE the striations on the muscle tissue ..... 

If this is a choice you really want to make - go for it.

When I was in chiropractic college and doing anatomy lab, all of our cadavers were those of folks who'd left their bodies to science.  These cadavers were in surprisingly good shape...for something that had been preserved in formaldehyde...but there's no denying the ravages of death and chemicals.

thanks guys for the input. again my ideal would be out to sea,  where o where is sundowner......
and food for thought (ok that was gross) i had to goto stl university for my massage class and watch the cadaver be  examined peeled back parts removed etc, it was gross but i made it through the sound of the saw was the worst.  everyone there had great respect for the corpse. However i have heard many stories of sick jokes (i think those are made out of being able to handle the situation) and sick pranks. i do at least want some respect. but than again i will be dead so...... add another aspect, i used to drink ALOT with friends after work, i take so much meds for the fibro, and i have had so much steroids put in my body via epidural shots.... how would that affect the situation?
