I plan to be cremated after I die, depending if there are viable organs used for donations.
actually...you bring up a good point that the decision for donation should be made by us, now. No ones family needs the burden of trying to figure what we would want.

I disagree with this.  I think that it should be the family's choice.  After all they are the ones going to have to live with it.  Sure you should discuss it with your family if you have strong preferences, but even if you get a will done, body disposal is a pretty easy thing to break in court.  I am of the opinion that why should it matter, you are dead, it is not as though you are going to know about it.

well that is not true. If you are donating (and i mean organs) the donation has to happen immediately when the deceased is taken off of life support and brain activity stops. The directive the patient has made is honored at that time. If the patient had signed to be a donor and the family wants to take it to court...they certainly can, but the organs will have already been harvested and transplanted. The wishes of the patient are honored by the medical staff.

I recall reading in Thomas Lynch's book, The Undertaking, about families challenging pre-done buriel contracts and winning.  He had a lot of good points about it.  And I do know that my opinions on what to do with my carcass when I die is not the most popular.

I would reccommend the book to you, as you enjoy non-fiction.  If I find my copy I will send it to you.

Why would you challenge a person's last wishes?

Why?  I suppose that it is because some people plan elaborate things like being cremated and tossed from a hot air balloon, and instead the family would prefer to have them buried so that they have some place permanant to go visit and bring flowers and such.

Would *I* challange them?  No.  But I was just speaking in general that it can and does happen.

My other half's family is very much into have a single resting place to go and find the dead.  I am more of a, "Well their dead and so there is not much purpose in keeping the body or whatnot around."  So this is a case where I defer to the family wishes because it means more to them than it does to me, and I also do not think that that should be taken away from them.

So I can see where a challange to last wishes would and could come about because of a difference in needs and values.

When my father died 2 years ago, the family followed his wishes and had him cremated, with the 'rule' that we did not scatter his ashes until the first year memorial. When the first year memorial came up, we did scatter his ashes on the river on which he died on. Unknown to us, he had wished for an Osage family tradition, as a tribute to our Indian forefathers (we are assimilated Indians, me being 1/8).

Thrown from a hot air balloon enables them to be anywhere, anytime you need to speak to them instead of making that drive to the cemetary.

Spelling fixed, free of charge, Aylee.
They're = contraction of "they are", as in "they are going to the store".
Their = "their grandfather owns the store".
There = "there are cute cashiers who work at the store".

Well, my family members have all discussed pretty much what to do with the bodies....the prevailing wish is to harvest what they can, burn 'em and drop 'em in a hole.  My parents have plots next to my paternal g'parents, not sure where my sis and bro in law have plots.....no one wants a funeral.....if someone feels the need, they can have a memorial sevice, but none of this hanging around for 3 days while everyone comes and visits the body.  As a whole, we're pretty blase about death......and no one will override the wishes of the deceased.  My parents, myself and one sis and bro in law I know are all organ donors.....not sure about the youngest one...if it's left up to us, well, see the above steps......I'd be okay with going to medical science.....

OK, back to your regularly scheduled silliness!

Yes.  I am still slightly brain dead I guess.  Although both need to be talked about with the executor of the estate and the one that holds the medical proxy.
