Okay, so I googled

barrie mollie frank john wendy

and totally lucked out.  I won't give it away except to say one of the cast members of a different TV series has a last name of Barrie, hence the "luck out." (Google brought up both of the TV shows among many.)  Oh, wait that's another clue, isn't it?  LOL! One of my all time favorites.

The Blue Rider
The Black Hand
The Red Studio
The Deep Purple

A good guess.

But only one is a painting, and it's not The Blue Rider in this case.

I should clarify, lest I unintentionally mislead--

"The Blue Rider" is not a painting in this instance, but it is connected to a painter.

OK, back to your regularly scheduled cogitation.

Any other thoughts, guesses, musings, stabs in the dark?

[It's hard to give outright hints here, without giving it away.]

There is a painting at the Museum of Modern Art called "The Red Studio" by Henri Matisse.  He was a Modernist.

There was a group of artists in Germany (1911-1914) called "Der Blaue Reiter" which would translate to The Blue Rider.  They were Expressionists.

There is a painting called "Deep Purple" in an on-line museum of modern art.  It is Modern Impressionism.

As far as The Black Hand...i'm not finding anything in my research.

My guess is that the thing these have in common is Modern Art.

Hi fluffy,

The Red Studio is the Matisse you mention. And The Blue Rider, started by Kandinsky, is also correct. Look carefully at what you just wrote--you've given yourself a clue.

You are incorrect about "Deep Purple." I do indeed mean "The Deep Purple." It is not a painting, nor is "The Black Hand."

"The Deep Purple" does relate to the arts, but not painting. "The Black Hand" has nothing to do with the arts.

They all have something else in common. Look at the clue you gave yourself.

(The Deep Purple was the name of an English Rock Band started in 1968.  So that would be the musical arts.)

You put the names of each item in the list in the color that matched the color in the title.  All the items begin with the word "The".  Is "The Color" what they have in common?

No, that's "Deep Purple," not "The Deep Purple." Also, "The Deep Purple" predates 1968 (that's another hint--put it together with the earlier one).

It's not connected to music. Color is not what they have in common, other than a theme for the quartet.

Take another look at "The Red Studio," too.

Jeff, I saw them live once, back in the day. Right up front.

One of my favorite concerts ever. A tight, focused, rocking band.

[For others..."The Book of Taliesyn" was a 1968 Deep Purple album--not an answer to the quartet]

"The Black Hand" is the English translation for the Sicilian phrase for the Mafia.

Matisse painted in Sicily - Haven't found where he painted "The Red Studio"

BUT I claim the answer of Sicily and am working on the others.

Sicily is incorrect, and this is a different Black Hand.

The answer is not a location, but you might take a look at Serbia.

The Black Hand movement wanted Serbia to be free from Austro-Hungarian rule.  The assassin of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie at Sarajevo on June 28th 1914, was a member of the Black Hand movement. This was the beginning of World War I.

Back to The Deep Purple, they were among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock.

So, with Matisse (The Red Studio) involved in starting the Modernist movement and The Blue Rider involved in defining Expressionism,

....we have a quartet of instigators.
