(fast reply)

Be who you are and what you are. Embrase it, face it dreal with it. It's YOUR situation (fat or thin).

Here I agree with you.

quote:

ORIGINAL: LightHeartedMaam

If your main issue is trying to get the world to give total acceptance by constantly getting in peoples faces, you defeat your purpose, for people will find YOU irritating regardless of your issues.

Here I don't. I'm both overweight and a transsexual female. Trust me, I'm not 'trying to get the world to give total acceptance by constantly getting in peoples faces', I'm just trying to live, plain and simple. Oh and these aren't really my issues, this is who I am at this moment in time. My issues are my issues, I face up to them and deal with them and don't feel the need to burden other people with them.

Why don't I agree? Because I'm getting tired of people getting themselves in my face with their issues with the dubious justification of 'what society thinks' telling me I'm wrong to be who I am. It's their issues, not mine.

And I would wager that this doesn't just apply to me but also the majority of the naturally born women who don't fit the supermodel stereotypes who have responded to this thread.

quote:

ORIGINAL: LightHeartedMaam
In the end, we all just have to live with ourselves and where ever we go, there we will be. The bottom line - when you love yourself, no one else can take that away from you. If your happiness depends on on others opinion or acceptance, you will never be happy.

I agree with this to a point. I don't have to be liked. I don't have to be popular. I am happy being who I am, believe me.

But I like everyone else have to live in society and among other people and I don't have to accept people foisting their own issues and prejudices on me or others trying to tell me that these are my issues.

The basis of this prejudice is the assumption of choice, in that a fat person is choosing to be fat (just as a transsexual is choosing their gender, a homosexual is choosing to be gay) which provides rather dubious justification for this prejudice.

Okay, some people do have a choice, but that choice is often limited to how they deal with stressful and difficult situations in their lives and not everybody can be strong, and yes, some people are weak and they get depressed and they comfort eat, some have demanding jobs and cannot take as much exercise as they like and so on.

Women much more than men face constant pressure from society, from the media, to 'look good', to stay in shape, to keep their figures, but guess what? Not all women are able to do this and rather than fight themselves for the acceptance of others they choose to carry the extra weight and be themselves and be happier.

But for the majority (and I wager it is the majority) there is no choice, because it is simply who they are, it is how they live and how their DNA is encoded. It's in their genes. And this is why obesity is such a complex and difficult problem for the medical profession to deal with.

But you know, when you explain these real and factual arguments to the body fascists they - like the homophobes and racists - develop this sort of mental block which is why on boards like this we will always have 'fat threads', fashion models will always have to look anorexic, and others will always be thinking up new diets.

Because for many people, this is a fetish/fantasy web site where the come to induldge.Look MNN.... did it ever occur to you that some of the more vicious anti fat posts come from fat people posing as something else? This is in no way directed at anyone specifically, using fast reply....

There is encouragement in society for people to be fat? where? who? how? How on earth did I miss it all.
Maybe food commercials? Are fat people the only people who watch/see/read/take notice of commercials for food?
Movies and tv shows are always using ordinary plain people, with hundreds of fat celebs? (oh darling one day you can be just like Roseanne or Rosie)
Too many people making designer sexy clothes for fat people? Or even regular designs that can be found in your local store in the same designs as slender people? Should we count ourselves lucky to have any clothing beyond mumus?
Airlines cater to fat people? Seat belts designed for fat people forced on the slender population?
Bathing suits designed for fat people that dont look like my great great aunt jemimas all encompassing sack that she wore on her holidays to southend on sea in the 1920s? god forbid looking for a bikini ("do you mind getting off the beach ma'am the tide is waiting to come in")

I have been fat/chunky/chubby/bbw/cuddly/large/gross/cow like/pig like/ fat bitch/ physically prosperous etc etc etc.(YAWWWN).... my entire life, yet I have never once, (not even a hint), heard of anyone or anything encouraging me to enjoy my fatness. I would probably fall over dead from the shock if someone actually did. and no Im not looking for sympathy, I am who I am and bugger anyone who doesnt like it.

Maybe it means that by accepting someone of size you are encouraging them? enabling them? like an addict? oooooooooooh then by all means put them down instead, call them names, accuse them of being less than human, call them lazy good for nothings, make yourself feel better by laying your issues on those who deserve nothing better.  Thats encouragement I can live with. (yeah a tiny bit of sarcasm there...)
Using health reasons IMNSHO is bogus , beyond  family and friends, most people dont give a rats arse about anyones health, mental or physical, (unless they work in those professions too). until its time to "justify" their dislike of fat people, then all bets are off.

I dont have an answer, I dont even have a question, I read, I learn, I enjoy and start all over again. We all have stories, the good, the bad the ugly and more. We all have  reasons why, excuses, and self justification for what we do, wether it be physical, mental, sexual, emotional, a hobby, a business, a craving..... but I see very little encouragement for anyone with a weight issue.
The world is a mean place in so many ways, I try not to add to the load. I prefer to laugh and love and enjoy what is out there, its so much more satisfying
But opinions are like arseholes, we all have them and occasionally they stink

zumala -> RE: BBW's, Is this something as a society that we should encourage? (6/22/2007 5:42:10 PM)

Every once in a while I read through one of these 'fat' threads.  I'm sure some people would attack me for saying a word because I'm clearly not 'obese'.  However, I'm also not in the shape that I want to be in.  I suspect it's because I haven't yet found the discipline necessary to reach my goal.  At the beginning of June I began again.  My goal is not just a weight, but fitness.  I want to be toned and in possession of strength, speed, and agility.  I'm guessing that my weight in that shape would fall between 112 and 120 as an adult who is small-framed and under 5'4".

Presently I need to lose about 12 lbs to reach 116.  I am not satisfied with my present body composition and seek to gain muscle (even though it weighs more than fat).  Some people look at me and call me 'skinny', I've been called 'little girl'... but I'm still not what I want to be.

Who wants to laugh at me?

That is not disturbing at all, it healthy. They should hate fat. There is a reason it is called "morbid" obesity!

No, what is truly disturbing are the people who continually make excuses and demand that everyone should except they are either A) a healthy fat or B) Cannot lose weight for one syndrome or another.

Our bodies are machines. The fuel is burned as calories. If you burn more calories that the amount you consume in a day and continually do so, you will lose weight because your body will start feeding off its stores. Once at a target weight, you can adjust you caloric intake to match your energy out put and maintain. It is called a lifestyle change. It is not easy, in fact it is extremely difficult and it is a lifetime commitment, just like an drunk staying away from hooch or a junkie from smack.

So why aren't you skinny?  Too lazy?  Is your own failure to lose weight the reason your posts are so angry and hateful on this topic?

My doctors still can't figure out how I can eat 1500 calories or less of healthy food per day, exercise for at least an hour a day (and I am talking sweating and aching from the effort workouts, not moseying through the mall & calling it exercise) and not get thin.  According to the numbers on the bloodwork I am overmedicated for hypothyroid disease to the point that I ought to be skinny as a rail & suffering extreme hypertension.  I am 187 lbs at last check, work out regularly, don't touch fast food or fried foods, and my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are both low.  I work a job for which a requirement is being able to comfortably lift forty pounds, and I do so many times a day.  One of my closest friends is a BBW who is also a professional bellydancer.   She's got better ab muscle control than any skinny chick I have ever seen.  Some people are just meant to be big, and the sooner the world copes with that, the better off we will all be.

Then don't bring it up next time.  Yes, you have the freedom of speech, but you also have the freedom to keep your mouth shut if something highly inappropriate is about to come out of it...

As a person who works in the healthcare industry I am appalled that someone could even be more than 100lbs over their ideal body weight let alone think it was something to flaunt.

So it's best for those women (and men) who are over 100 pounds over their "ideal body weight" to hide in their house, never show their hideous fat faces to the world and not have a scrid of self-esteem?  Or trying to make the best of what might be a bad situation for them, whether it be a medical or genetic issue they have no control over?

According to every chart I've seen, at 6'4" tall, my "ideal weight" is what.. 180 pounds?  At 200 I look sick and anorexic.  At 220 I look pretty damn good, if I do say so.  I'm not especially happy with being 235-240, but I deal with it.  Do I flaunt it?  Not especially.  Do I mind being looked at?  Not especially.

subinmaine2 -> RE: BBW's, Is this something as a society that we should encourage? (6/23/2007 9:02:38 AM)

i asked myself this question after reading this thread:

If someone came into my life who refused to see past the "Neiman Marcus" gift wrap to the present inside, then would i really want to pursue a friendship/relationship with them?

Newp...i'd want someone who looked deeper, saw the real me and not only appreciated it, but cherished it. NO MATTER MY SIZE.

THAT is healthy...stressing and worrying over how others "perceive" you is NOT healthy.

Just my humble opinion...

ManInTheBox -> RE: BBW's, Is this something as a society that we should encourage? (6/23/2007 9:28:37 AM)

Speaking of which...I met the Owner of Neimann Marcus last weekend :D lol...anyway it's no secret that stress kills you. Other factors obviously contribute to it as well. Being obscenely overweight, even though you're not stressing about it can't be THE healthiest thing for you either...

i agree, however the original post mentioned "flaunting" the fact that you are fluffy *smile* To me, that is an action, an emotion, a sense of ones self and a sense of pride.
my concern with the subject is based mostly on the emotional aspect.  One should not think less of themselves simply due to their size.

i wouldn't even begin to argue the "healthy" aspect as it should be a given, and there is no argument...being "morbidly" obese (or even obese) may increase one's risk for health issues.  i say "may" because it could for some, and it might not for others...it's a crap shoot. But, look at the flip side of the coin, being anorexic (ie; 90lb supermodel) is equally unhealthy and can pose similar health risks...as can stress and genetic disposition.

my only issue is the view that some hold:  that overweight people are social pariah's...it baffles me and i find that belief to be the epitome of ignorance.[;)]
